Manual Or Automatic Upgrades
Probably the more experience you have in working with software the more you would tend to cringe at trusting automatic upgrades. Wordpress provides for automatic upgrades due to the importance of using them. The big problem is the necessary use of outside utilities called plugins.
The plugins are dependent on their own updates and possibly can cause conflicts, errors, or other problems when Wordpress itself is upgraded.
What do you do? Some would say to test everything with a special test copy before risking your “bread and butter” version. You could potentially wreck your customers’ experience if you do not check everything first as much as possible.
I personally use automatic upgrades though due to the fact it is very important to make certain you have the latest optimizations and bug fixes in the main program. I do not want to overlook something important. My critical plugins do upgrade quite rapidly, if they need to.
Manual upgrading is something too often deferred for all sorts of good reasons. It can be a major project in itself. The problem is the fact it is deferred. You would not put Windows updates on manual would you? Some of us are nuts and bolts types of people and like doing this sort of stuff though.
If you use a possibly obscure plugin for special purposes you naturally may not feel comfortable with using automatic updates. That is up to you.
I, myself, think it is much easier disabling individual plugins to check out an apparent reduction in your blogs operations that you notice after an upgrade if it seems necessary.
I just believe you should always use the latest version of your main program. The people responsible for the program are aware of the consequences of their actions and have decided it is worthwhile to make the changes.
It is a little bit like medications. Almost all drugs have side effects. Is it worth dealing with the side effects to get the benefits of the drug?

I appreciate that now with Windows 10 the "normal" home user does not have the choice but to have automatic updates. Do you think this standard practice for business!
Do you think Amazon or your local hospital enables all their software for automatic updates in the blind hope that their suppliers have got it right ? No , because they would never put their business or patients at such risk. I know because this is my sort of background.
What about your webhost or WA do you think they bother to test anything?
If our site is our business then we have to take responsibility for it ourselves. If you want to run your site as a business than you need to adopt a business mindset. If you just want a hobby then that is great too and you can afford to take greater risks.
The biggest risk with updates is not Wordpress itself as that undergoes extensive testing, but the action and performance of plugins. I have witnessed data corruption and website hijacking as a result of security plugin rogue updates.
In answer to John, many of the plugins in use on members websites are actually free and offer no support, no accountability
It is a very quick process to hit that backup button before updating your site but at the end of the day it is your site, your risk and your decision, no one else's. If you are happy with that decision then great!
Exactly!
It is one only each site owner can carryout for themselves as it is only they who know the importance of any site to their business.
Hi Terry,
I always update manually.
What I have found over the years is that even if there is a problem with an update, it is usually very quickly corrected with another update.
You have to remember that these plugins are somebody else's business and they are as concerned as we are with getting it right.

I am not very technical and I tend to use the automatic updates,
