Hello WA Family,

Today I wanted to do a post about my home country South Wales. I know a lot of people using this platform are American, however I’ve seen some profiles from all over the world.

I wanted to write a post about Wales as it’s quite an unknown country in areas such as America, I remember when I visited America to go to Florida and a person we met believed it to be in Canada!

So this is more about my home country I live in, whether you’ve heard of It before or would like to know some more.

Wales in General- What to expect

Wales is generally a mountainous country so expect lots of greenery, mountains of course and nature. There’s plenty of walks to take and stunning views with amazing landscape to discover.

We’re actually a part of the United Kingdom, however Wales is not featured on the Great British flag known as the Union Jack or Union Flag. Locals here do speak English however we are known for also speaking Welsh due to our Welsh heritage. The welsh language is more popular in the Northern areas of Wales, the South area where I live mainly speaks English, but most towns, villages and even street names are still Welsh to this day. Although we are not featured on the Union Flag for the United Kingdom, we do have our own flag..which features a dragon! How cool is that? Here’s our flag:

We have a Celtic culture and there are many castles in Wales, some ruins and some still going or re-built for historical and cultural purposes.

As I live in South Wales, my capital city is called Cardiff. We have a very well-known castle called ‘Cardiff Castle’ and lots of shopping centres to browse with good transport and busy nightlife. Cardiff is quite a musical city and is known for its many singers , buskers and musicians you may bump into when browsing the city. Cardiff Castle also has concerts there from time-to-time and is a really great place to visit.

Welsh Weather- Expect Rainfall!

Although we boast a great countryside we’re not the sunniest place to visit, so you may need to expect some rain and colder temperatures. Of course, this is all down to where you live yourself and what you’re used to. We measure our temperatures in degrees and celsius and our summer period is usually during June, July and August. During our summer period, we can expect temperatures in the region of 10°C to 28°C. So for instance even if we were at one of our highest temperatures of 28°C, this would work out around 82.4°F in Fahrenheit. Is this warm to you compared to your summers?! I’ve visited other countries which still have much warmer temperatures in October time than us in the summer , such as Cyprus for comparison.

Great for Hiking and countryside Walks

If you enjoy hiking and walking, South Wales features a mountain range known as the Brecon Beacons. The Breacon Beacons includes South Wales highest mountain , Pen-Y-Fan. Pen-Y-Fan is 886 meters above sea level making it a 672 mile trek.

We also have a mountain in the North of Wales known as Mount Snowdon in the region of Snowdownia, and Mount Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. Along with this, Snowdonia also has the highest peaks in the United Kingdom outside of Scotland!

However if you don’t fancy walking all the way to the summit, you can always use the historical railway Snowdon Mountain Railway which climbs to the summit for you to see the views without much effort on your part.

If you didn’t guess from the name of the area, some parts of the mountain have glacial landforms so expect it to get cold the further you climb!

Most popular animal in Wales- Sheep!

Being a countryside region, Wales is very well known for it’s sheep! There’s plenty of mountains and grass for sheep to graze here. There was once a disturbance on Cardiff city centres railway line where they had to stop the train schedule due to a flock of sheep getting onto the railway tracks! It was reported that there were more than 10 million sheep in Wales in 2017.

So I hope you have enjoyed reading about Wales and maybe learnt something new.

Best,

Takara

Hi Takara.
That was a very informative post. Love to learn about where others are from. Sounds like a beautiful place. Too bad you couldn't send that rain to Australia.
Wanda

So true my prayers are with Australia

Awesome info! Thanks for sharing!

Very informative, Takara, and the pictures are beautiful! I remember reading about something called the Cardiff Giant a long time ago--can't remember much else about it!

Tamara, great post. We learn about U.K. from football or what Americans call soccer. Yeah, I know Cardiff City. Yes, the FC is more recognized than the capital of Wales... Ha! Ha!

👍🏼 Stanley

Ah yes that's very true , Cardiff FC isn't too bad! We are also popular for Rugby here too :)

Thanks for liking my post and commenting :)

Tamara, I love Wales and have been there many times, as I lived in England for 7 years. Beautiful country and people.
Joe

Oh that's great :)
Yes it is lovely, and I agree the people are nice - Although I may sound biased!

It's true. It is beautiful.
