Is My Ladder Leaning Against the Right Wall?

When I first started the Online Entrepreneur Certification course, I quickly realized how much writing I was going to have to do. And I thought I needed a niche with which I had lots of experience, to make the writing easier. The writing was easier and I really enjoyed writing the blogs. So what does that have to do with ladders?

If my ladder is leaning against the wrong wall, it makes no difference how far and high I climb. I can climb and climb and then climb some more. And when I'm done, my climbing will have been in vain. Why? Because I'm on the wrong roof! My only choice will be to climb back down, move the ladder, and then start the climb all over again. And what do ladders and walls have to do with niches?

One of the real benefits of the WA training programs is that when you finish, you will have a well-built, professional-looking website with lots of content. And chances are, you are already getting solid traffic and even making some money. That is why one of the first lessons is about picking the right niche. Your niche represents "the wall" in this blog.

I am starting to realize that my Retire outside the USA niche is probably not my best choice. Part of the problem is that I'm still looking for good products I can promote successfully. I should have answered that question as part of my niche selection.

The more important part is that I'm up against some really large publishers who have multiple articles by hundreds of authors covering every topic I would write about. I am having trouble seeing how I could ever get to Google page 1. And as we all know, if I can't get to page 1, no one will find my site, and therefore I will not be able to make much, if any money.

My conclusion - I think my ladder is up against the wrong wall. So before I get too far in this process, I'm going to revisit the whole niche selection process. Fortunately, for now, I have all the work and learning I need with the Super Affiliate Challenge. Perhaps I will occasionally add content to this other site just for fun, while focusing most of my efforts on successfully completing the SAC.

Thanks for listening. I really enjoy giving and receiving comments, so please let me know what you think. And please make sure your ladder is leaning against the right wall. To quote one of my favorite speakers, Zig Ziglar - "See You At The Top!"

Whatever you write will be from your perspective and different. Its a big world out there and plenty of room for all. If you do want to change, maybe keep that anyway ans think about later. At least the work done so far won`t be wasted. Good luck.

I'm familiar with two subscription sites which rave about central and south America and are not cheap. One of them I've noticed never mentions whether an area is earthquake-prone or has crime problems.

I don't know if they are your main competition, though. There are also a lot of free expat forums where people can get more info and in some cases ask questions.

Yeah, maybe you need a new ladder.

I have said this in one of my posts, but the thing I hate most about those sites is that they obviously try to keep everyone (their sponsors) happy. One year Panama is the best, the next year it is Costa Rica, then Portugal, then back to Panama, etc. How can the best place change every year?

And when a significant negative change happens, you never read about it in those sites. Everything is "hunky-dory". In 2017, Panama changed the way it enforced its tourist visas. Many North Americans could no longer qualify to live there, so they left. Imagine what that did to property values.

So my site does provide some benefit, but not unless someone can find it. Better to move on to greener pastures.

I agree.

Hi Steve, best wishes with the SAC, it will keep you busy.

With every niche we need to look at that problem, not the broad one, but the one we drill down into and the solutions that we are proficient in.

Retiring cross boarder, is becoming a trend.

Some folks are set up, however many would be looking to supplement their retirement funds, the field is wide open in this arena, WA would be a fit as would many other health and wellness programs.

Just a thought.

I am hoping you are exactly right Alex. I am basing my target market on that assumption.

Great analogy. Yes, I've had that feeling a time or two -- like the ladder belongs someplace else.
