What does happiness depend on? 7 tips on how to achieve your happiness
¨Happiness appears to everyone according to his understandings¨
Abdul Taiyib
The question of happiness is individual for each person. So there is no universal formula for happiness. The question is "What is happiness for me?" Everyone wants to feel that true happiness that eludes many of us. Continue with the question: ¨Was today a good day?¨ and "Why?". The answer to the first question will be yes, if you are happy today. It is precisely for this reason that the answer to the second question is important.
So not only am I happy, but why.
Ph.D. Geshi Kelsang Gyatso claims that our mind is like a balloon in the wind that is carried by external situations and conditions. It's that feeling when everything we want goes as planned, but when something stops or when we do, for example, with a colleague we don't like, then our sense of happiness disappears.
So, as long as our answers to the question of why depend on external situations, conditions and other people to whom we explain our happiness, we will not be able to maintain that happiness in the long run. Since happiness and unhappiness are states of the lower mind, their true causes cannot be found outside the mind.
Professor Raghunathan at the University of Texas teaches an extremely popular course on happiness that has been taken by over a thousand students. He explained that some self-generated factors always stand in the way of happiness. In his book: If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy?, Raghunathan calls these factors the sins of happiness. They include striving for superiority, wanting to be the center of attention, wanting to control others and outcomes, and not giving happiness a high priority. It says that the smarter and more successful you are, the more likely you are to commit these sins.
At the beginning of this text, we said that happiness is an individual matter. For this reason, we cannot give you a "recipe" or "how to" for achieving long-term happiness. This kind of happiness is achieved by constant work on oneself and self-actualization.
However, these 7 useful exercises from the book by dr. Geshi Kelsang Giatsa will definitely help you on your way to happiness:
Make happiness a priority. Remind yourself, just before making important decisions, that happiness is your goal in life. It is important to understand that happiness depends solely on you.
Show gratitude to someone who has had a positive impact on your life. An influence that may have moved you towards a change that still makes you happy today.
Practice creative altruism with "random" acts of kindness. We really get a lot of joy when we do something for other people and help others.
Lead a healthy life. Sleep well, eat well and exercise. Days filled with positive activities help us feel better mentally, and after a good night's sleep, we rest physically.
Learn to forgive. It turns out that when we have a bad memory, it hurts us more than the person we remember those bad deeds by. Because if our mind is filled with bad thoughts and negative feelings, even if the external conditions are positive, it will be almost impossible to feel happiness.
Learn to think that even though what happens sometimes turns out to be bad in the moment, even that will be good for you later.
Forget about the past and the future. Practice mindfulness, just to be in the moment, here and now. Being in the moment, we become aware of ourselves, our desires and new goals that are extremely achievable with a little motivation.
In other words, it's not what happens that makes us unhappy.
How we react and experience these events determines whether we are happy or not.
