Heading in the right direction

No, this is not another blog which attempts to teach you how to use heading tags correctly for SEO!

It's more of a... shall we say... confessionary blog, if you will.

In Live Chat the other day, the ubiquitous debate arose about which heading tags to use and when. So I started thinking about my posts and pages. I realised that, in a large number of them, I use my own CSS selectors (with a Google Font plug-in). This was my way of adding a certain flair to my posts and pages.

The problem with that, though, was that I didn't have enough <h1>, <h2> and <h3> tags. Funnily enough, when I had Yoast installed, alarm bells did go off, but I ignored them.

So, guess what I've been doing since the wee hours of this morning (bearing in mind that it's 16:15, here in Brisbane)?

Yes sir!

I've just spent the entire day, going through every single page and post, adding appropriate heading tags. Whew!

And there was an added bonus too: I was able to get rid of a plug-in!

Yeah P.S. Google fonts ironically is one of the things that will slow down your site. :)

I'm still stuck with 10 plugins, though. Some of which are part of my X theme.

Yeah, yeah! I know what you're thinking, Cory...

Why do you consider the plugin count a problem? It's really more the content of the plugin than quantity. Besides if we get page caching down, most of those plugins won't even be run when the visitor comes by. Well I say most. It depends on the plugin really, but for the most part you'll just be serving a static page rather than one created on the fly.

Only because of WA's Site Health indicator. Red is not an agreeable color for me. I prefer green.

Oh really that's part of the measurement. I'll have to look into that and see what the deal is there.

Jay commented on the Site Health indicator at one point and said it was an indicator only. He said it's not an absolute yardstick (or words to that effect).

You and Mel live on live chat, Stephen, lol. I love watching your conversations.

Aha! So you've been lurking, Michael!

Ooops, no I heard it from someone, their name escapes me.

Haha!

Something for you Stephen

Aw, thanks, Michael. That was very cute!

Good effort Steve. I'm still using AIO for SEO. I tried to install Yoast a while back but I got error about not having admin rights or something.

Good! I don't think I'll ever use Yoast again, to be honest.

You need to put H7 on a pillow and rest now :)

LOL

good info, Steve. :) you accomplished an important task

I hope so, Asen.

It was too hot in Brisbane for me today. Big Storm heading your way. We just beat it back over the range. From Warwick it looked green.

Mate I'm watching the storm roll in as we speak.

A little noisy one here in Tenterfield at the moment but very little rain.

Good that you were able to get it together and increased your page speed by getting rid of that plugin

Thanks, Ronald.

Your welcome, Step

Ha ha!! I bet you're tired!
Great work :-)

I'm smashed!

Give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done!:)

I do make my own life difficult sometimes, Pauline!

Don't we all from time to time?:)

Wow, that's a lot of work. In the training Kyle has us use the All In One SEO Pack plugin and I see many using Yoast. What are the benefits for this and should I change mine?

Cathy, that's a whole other debate! My personal take on it is to stick with All in One SEO. I tried Yoast, had issues with it, then went back to AIOSEO.

I'm happy where I am.

Thanks!

You're welcome, Cathy.
