Ask your duck first!

Okay. I know what you're thinking. Clearly the pain medication is getting to Steve!
Well, no. Read on...
This blog is really thanks to Brendie who blogged about questions and answers. It was a post that I really liked and it made me think about a methodology we use which works well.
We all like to help where we can, right? But time is something which is both precious and something which should be respected. So when it comes to asking questions, I believe we need to be respectful of people's time.

It's always good to see a question being asked which has clearly had some thought put into it. Too many times we see people asking questions which clearly reflect the fact that they've put in no effort whatsoever, in trying to first figure things out themselves.
At the office we each have a little rubber duck. The idea is that if you have a question, ask your duck first. It sounds really dumb but it really does work! Often if you verbalize your question first (by silently asking your duck), then very often you'll figure out the solution yourself.
In fact, some of us tell our team members to bring three answers along with every one question they have. That encourages them to think about the question they're about to ask.
These simple techniques have not only increased productivity in our teams because of reduced interruptions, but they've also empowered people a lot more in finding their own solutions.
So, do you believe me now that I haven't gone completely crazy?

Nice! Yep, encourages people to think first before opening their mouths :-) It does help to get a second opinion though, are you allowed to consult someone else duck? I see myself walking around the office having conversations with the duckies trying to figure out their personalities and knowledge base :-D
:-D interesting rumours though! Just imagine everything the ducks have been whispered to over the years!
This is awesome. And yes, I see people who ask questions that can be easily answered if they just do a little searching or "ask the duck" as you said. Whenever I have had a question it is after I have hunted around for a good while searching for the answer on my own.
Steph
I love your post. We need to respect our own time as well as that of others. Making notes is very useful to me, so that when I do ask the questions I can't resolve on my own, I can get better answers. I follow Tony Robbins a lot. He says that successfull people ask better questions so they get better answers. I fully agree. :-)
So, what you're saying, is that I can't ask questions unless I have a rubber duck? Oh.....let the rubber duck ask the questions for me? Wait a minute.....Don't get a duck? Have other people ask my questions to the duck for me? What.....Let the duck take my meds? I'm confused.....
Ok, I'm finished......great post Steve, lol.

Thank you for sharing. You are right, sometime the questions ask are just right in front, and easy to answer. Some people like spoon feeding, but I know, some other people like me doesn't like to ask question. So which is better?
