Interruptions
An interruption may be defined as an instance in time when one activity is stopped, delayed, or paused for another activity. Interruptions can be unplanned or strategic, and either welcomed or bothersome.
The ring of an alarm clock may interrupt a peaceful sleep, but the ring of a smoke detector can save lives. A phone call may occur in the middle of your favorite television show, but the call may be from someone greatly desired or sorely missed.
No matter if interruptions are pleasing or irritating, there are some truths about interruptions that cannot be disputed. Interruptions in daily life will occur. When it comes to the more annoying or troublesome interruptions, the important questions are how detrimental the derailment is and if it is worth the time, energy, and cost to resume the originally intended course. It is this very question why individuals, groups, organizations, and even governments invest a great deal of time and money in predictive methodologies. Predictive strategies range from soothsayers to complex Information Technology decision support systems.
There is another certainty in regards to interruptions. Once an interruption occurs that instant in time and space cannot be undone. All that is left is what is here and now, and what will be in the next moments to follow. Contemplation of the interrupt may elucidate a course of action allowing recovery, or even a better objective. However, care should be taken not to dwell incessantly upon interruptions, because history is meant to be studied, not lived in.
