Reddit Shows No Love - and Lots of Love
I watched one of Jay's WAbinars the other day about posting to Reddit and some other sites, which I have not really been doing till now, so thanks Jay for showing me that.
Anyways I posted a few links on Reddit and was very surprised at the extra amount of traffic it sent me. From the time I went to bed to the time I woke up I saw a huge increase in traffic. Well huge for me at least.
Okay now to the main point of this post. I noticed I got my first negative comment about an article I wrote! The comment was on the Reddit link. and now for the comment and my reply.
also for reference this is the post he is referring to:
http://loseweightforteens.com/weight-loss-smoothie-for-teens
negative comment:
"How is eating this is any better than NOT eating this?
It's nothing but sugar, and maybe 2 or 3 grams of fiber."
my reply:
"Some sugar is not bad for you. In fact it can help sustain your blood sugar; I am not suggesting using smoothies as a complete dietary replacement. and for reference, 1 cup of say blackberries has 8 grams of dietary fiber, and one medium banana has 3.1 grams of dietary fiber. So try more like 11 grams. and not to mention bananas and berries are chalked full of vitamins and minerals."
Hopefully I didn't come on to strong. I wanted to write a lot more but since it was just a comment I could not really write much. Anyways besides the one negative comment, and about 4 spam post (the spam plugin caught them though) I am very happy with the extra traffic.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the negative comment. You cannot please everyone and as Ethan says there are people who make it their business to rip up others.
I have exactly the same experience with reddit and I am very careful about what I post on there. I post very safe things like recipes and even then, there are people on reddit who seem determined to rip you apart! I have a friend who posted some links promoting a business opp and was so traumatized by the backlash of negativity she deleted her account.
But when I do post a recipe, I get 1500 or so extra visitors as a result.
I'm glad i'm not the only one. Thanks for the information, i will keep that in mind for future things I post on Reddit. The extra traffic is nice though, maybe not quite the quality of organic search engine traffic, but at least its something.
Reddit is tricky. On the one hand, if you know how to manage it and especially if you become known within a community this can easily mean a few hundred views from a single link. (And more down the line.)
On the other hand, your talking about tons of people and a fast paced community. You will either get quick, nasty, sarcastic comments of no value. (This will happen a lot.) Or you will get long drawn out essays that put in some good criticisms and often lead to debates.
Here's my general advice with online interaction. If you find Sarcasm, Cynicism, or Exaggeration (SCE) feel free to ignore it. It won't help you, and chances are the person either won't respond to your replies or they will only get worse.
If you find Curiosity, Humor, or Impudence (CHI), embrace it and open the conversation. These are the people that can lead to regular readers. (By impudence I mean people who can criticise in a mature way, without SCE).
By the way, I edited the above comment. SCE is Sarcasm, Cynicism, Exaggeration. lol XD
The ideas come from the link below which includes the two articles that I wrote to develop the two ideas.

Write a post that explains this more fully, then go back to your reply and edit it. Say you've answered these questions in this post and link the words this post to the actual post.
I wouldn't call that negative feedback at all, I'd call it really positive feed back, why? Because they took the time to read your whole article and then wrote a comment. That means they engaged with what you wrote. It also means you now have an opportunity to write a new article, addressing these points.
I was actually just thinking about writing a post explaining more of the health benefits. Thanks for the advice Michelle. And I guess your right, the goal is to get interaction, and this gives me the perfect opportunity to write another post.

Sometimes people just want to be mean and negative, I wouldn't worry about it.
