Nordstrom Grants Extra Maternity Leave For Employees :

Hello and Happy Wednesday!!

So I am at a cross roads with this, and am asking for advice from the community :)

So I have been back from ML for about 6 months now and right when I was about to come back from ML my company passed a "Bonding Time" ML that extends the ML for an extra 6 weeks. This 6 weeks can be taken all at once or in increments of 2 weeks... and unlike the 60% pay out that the regular ML pays.... this extended Leave would pay 100%

Oh the things I could do with an extra 6 weeks of time. The extra time with my daughter would be amazing... though I would still keep the Nanny employed to help me so I could also spend some much needed extra time on WA to work on by businesses.

I've been working so much, really the only time I have had in the past 3 weeks for WA is to do a blog post before going to bed.

Of course thinking of it, "what is the dilemma" - "Why am I not jumping at this opportunity"... well guess it is because in the restaurant industry it runs a little different... in most other industries there would be an interim that would take your spot until you return.... but I would just have my assistant and then the rest of the manager group... which means they would have to work harder, in an already stressful unit - and I'd feel selfish. Also my Regional Manager (my boss) is a bachelor and definitely would be shocked and probably beside himself if I told him I was taking this time. Then again I try to tell myself that HR is the one telling me I should take advantage... and my that gap is closing because my daughter will be 1 in 4 months and I have till then to complete this extra ML....

Mothers (or even fathers) of WA, what would you do?

Cheers,

I would take it. But not all at the same time. Maybe divided into 3 times 14 days.

I think I would take the time off, and enjoy the baby.

I'm not a mother but think of what is best for you and your family. If the opportunity is there, I say take it. I bet your coworkers would do the same. Enjoy your time. Debbie

Thank you all very much for your advice!! I too believe that I would regret it if I didn't take the time with my daughter!

I will never get this time back. I also agree that anyone, given the opportunity would take the time.

Thank you again!

Cheers,
Shannon

You may regret not going back to work. However, you will most definitely regret not taking more time with your baby. Your fellow employees will understand, and would most likely do the same, and recommend it to you, if given the opportunity.

You will never regret the time you spend with your child. That time is worth far more than money. If you take the time, do it to be with your daughter. Your greatest calling in life is to be a Mom.

Don't mean to sound preachy but do what is most important. I think you already know what that is. How wonderful that you even have an option!!

Take the extra time. Enjoy your baby. You have the rest of your life to work. This time with your baby will not come again. My hat's off to all parents.

Can it be, a maternity is for being a wife also?

Hello, Jimmy. Do you mean it's time to learn to put your role in the right order? First your spouses and second parents?

People are not just people without relationships. Being a spouse is a relationship, being a child to parents is a relationship and when they need it badly we don't compromise our relationship but we can compromise other things.

Use it for mothering instead of work!
