Updateing theme
Ok so I noticed a few days ago when i logged in i had a theme update, so i was going to do it till i read this,
The following themes have new versions available. Check the ones you want to update and then click “Update Themes”.
Please Note: Any customizations you have made to theme files will be lost. Please consider using child themes for modifications
so i clicked on child themes and it starts talking about adding a file to your theme directory, so I couldn't find it and just had to walk away from it. So today i wanted to try to figure this out. So i start reading again and read more and I realize, wait i do not have wordpress downloaded so i go to do that, and started reading the how to and its talking all about web host and adding it to them and you and back ups and I am confused and do not know what I am doing at this point for that, Ive been trying to find actual step by step, as in, ok you click this button than this go to this file and add this and change this exact 3 words and i can not find anything like this. a generalization of oh just find this random file and add another to it just is not working, I need help. I do not want to mess anything up and I do not have any backups due to the same thing, I cant find a straight explanation on how to do it. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated. ps, it now says 2 updates.

I'm not too sure about updating, but when I went Premium, I changed my theme. I first backed up my site, because sometimes with a change like that you could lose your work.

Then I went to Appearances > Themes> Install Themes. Choose your new theme and click 'Install' and its done.
Or am I misunderstanding you totally?

yes that is one of my issues, it just started to confuse me so i just have not touched anything, I will deal with it later, for now, dig my car out from the snow, oh yay.

I wouldn't worry about using child themes. As long as you back up your site - you can always return it to it's original state if something goes wrong. A change of theme is generally no problem.
To back up your site you can either do it as Kyle suggests here

I personally choose dropbox which you can sign up to for free.
Even if you are not changing your theme it is a good idea to have your site backed up on a regular basis.
