The Not-So-Secret Secret To Making $1 Million In Commissions
If you had to be super smart to do affiliate marketing, I'd be doing something else.
I'm not trying to act all humble or anything, but the fact is:
- I'm not the best writer
- I'm not the best at video
- I'm not the best at website design
- I'm not the best at SEO
And yet, I've made over $1 million in commissions since I joined Wealthy Affiliate 8 years ago.
Now this is the bit I should say it's because I'm super diligent and hardworking, but I can't (in all honesty) say that either! 😂
Don't get me wrong, there have been periods where I've hustled like my life's depended on it, but there have also been times - months even - where I coast and do the minimum work possible.
So What's My Not-So-Secret Secret?
Are you sitting down? This is going to blow you away...
Only joking. It actually sounds really boring but it's this:
I stick at improving one skill long enough until I'm good enough.
Meaning I practice and practice and practice until I've mastered a skill, then I move onto the next.
And I do that over and over again.
Let's Make This Real
Writing my first 100 blog posts was like torture. Seriously! I struggled like hell to get to 500 words. And reading those now is extremely embarassing - they are terrible!
But I stuck with it and kept hitting publish.
1,000+ posts later and now it is impossible for me to write any less than 1200-1500 words. Actually impossible. I'd like to think my writing has got a lot better too.
So then it was time to look Youtube square in the eyes and face it head on.
I'd been kinda avoiding it for years...
I was very comfortable hiding behind the keyboard and there's something about staring down the lens of a camera that brings out all your doubts and insecurities.
But I kept hitting record and uploading to Youtube.
And guess what?
Gradually, bit by bit, I got more confident to the point the point now where I actually enjoy creating videos.
And this week Dale123 and I did our first ever weekly live hangout on Youtube.
It was nervewracking and scary and not perfect by any means. There are still a few tech glitches we need to iron out BUT...
Overall it went well and I'm looking forward to next Wednesday and every Wednesday after that because I get to do it all over again.
Because practicing one skill at a time and doing it repeatedly over and over means you WILL get better.
Now maybe you're a little smarter than me and you can pick up stuff quicker, but the same goes:
Stick at improving one skill long enough until you're good enough.
Whether that's:
- Choosing keywords
- Writing intros
- Giving compelling calls to action
- Creating images
- Sending emails
- Editing videos

Hello Simon,
There are a few of the categories that you listed that I definitely need to improve.
1. Choosing Keywords
2. Writing Intros
3. Giving a Compelling Call To Action
But I, just yesterday, took advantage of the Black Friday Event and will definitely be working on these things until I have them down.
Thank you for sharing. It is nice to know that I am not the only one who struggles with these topics, lol.
Have a wonderful weekend!
You're definitely not the only one Cathy! I didn't talk about this but within each skill are usually a series of mini skills you need to master.... But you will get there as I say.
Just keep your head up with your eyes on the prize 🏆👀😎
Hello Simon,
I hope you're doing well. Thank you for your excellent blog post.
That is such a great story, it just shows what can be achieved when we put our minds to something!
It's interesting how you struggled with writing a 500-word blog post, but now you can easily write a 1000 to 1500 blog post! Practice makes perfect!
I believe the more we practice something, the better we can potentially become.
If we don't take action, nothing happens! Sometimes as you mention, we just have to hit the record button!
Wishing you continued success.
Roy
Yep! Honestly I still struggle with perfectionism but you just got to irritate yourself that your first few posts, videos, whatever it is, aren't gonna be that great.
And that's completely FINE.
Just publish it and move on to the next one ☺️
Same to you Roy!
Thank you for your reply, Simon, it's appreciated!
Many times perfectionism can spoil or stop someone's dream! I have seen it! It sounds good to aim for perfection, but it doesn't work quite like that!
I believe that your post will encourage many people, Simon; sometimes we overcomplicate!
Enjoy your weekend.
Roy
Guilty as charged 💯. We can set the expectation so high it's impossible and that's super demotivating!
Cheers Roy
This is what I liked about you two.. you are both so real and honest! :)
Thank you and have an amazing weekend. God bless!
That's means more than you know Anabella! Thank you so much for your support! 🥰
You have a great weekend too!
Great advice Simon! Definitely something to focus on doing just that one thing good first, then going on to the next skill...I've found once you do something so many times it becomes so much easier!
Thanks for sharing! And, way to go on the videos, btw!
Best wishes :) ~Sherry
Thanks so much Sherry! Yes, do it so much it becomes second nature. You'll enter like a competency zone where you become fluent and it flows.
There where it starts getting fun 😊

Thanks for that nice little piece of advice Simon in Asia. I'm also in Asia and i can spit out words when I need to but I have trouble sticking to a dedicated program. I need to reinvigorate my passion and drive and this type of experience and photo are just the thing.
I'm looking down the barrel of my second year and still along way from my first 100 posts... but we'll get there.
Thanks again for the inspiration
