Above the fold content explanation?

Although I do understand that for the amp page to correctly display the above the fold content is important.
I am having a hard time to make it happen because I do not understand the concept.
Using the above the fold optimization plugin a deep learning curve. It is there a way to do it manually.
By using a child theme give you some control such as I could make the above the fold content load first load the rest of the file.
If there are any resources where I can learn how to make it will be a great help to me.
