Believing in yourself....
Hi all!
Wanted to share a sunshine story on how believing in yourself and standing up for your opionion can create small miracles.
As you know I breed Salukis now and then. The guy on the picture is one of my "babies" and was supposed to stay a while with me when his family had to go abroad. 7 moths ago he had an encounter with a wild boar and got his front leg broken, but the vet mended him with a steel plate and screws.
When he came to me I immediately noticed that one of the screws was starting to come out and had this really bad feeling about the whole thing. The dog had obvious problems and started limping after about 20 minutes of excercise. I took the dog to the big vetclinic to get the leg x-rayed.
Of course the vet was a bit sceptical when I came in saying I was afraid that the plate and screws was damaging the bone. I also told them that they didn't need to sedate the dog for x-rays if I could assist during the x-raying. After some time the vet came back and said OK lets try. The dog was being a superhero during x-rays, keeping 100% still without sedation. The nurses were very impressed.
When that was done the vet was in awe. It was 100% clear that the pressure from the oversized plate and screws had done a lot of damage and that the radiusbone had no density at all in the middle. A few more months like that would have been cathastropical.
OK so now we needed to get the metal out of the leg asap. Of course the vets wanted to play safe and do 2 operations. First just removing the 4 screws in the middle of the leg and at a later stage remowing the plate and remaining screws.
I disagreed and pointed out a different and in my opinion much better solution. Do one operation, remove all the metal and put the dog in a plaster for 3-4 weeks instead. They discussed this option but still didn't want to do it like that. At the morning of the operation I met with the Vet in charge and again told them what I wanted. I explained again that I was a dogphysioterapeut and for me to be able to rehab the dog with microcurrent-treatment they had to remove the metal. I had a looong discussion and got as far as getting a promise that they might do it my way, but would decide during the operation.
I obviously had gotten my idea to grow on them, because the vet started thinking about what she would have done if it was her dog. All the metal was removed and no 2nd operation was necessary!!!
After 1 week of rehab, the operation wound had healed fully. After 3 weeks of rehab we could get rid of the plaster and the new x-rays showed more bone had started to form!
Tomorrow his owner is coming to pick him up and continue training and the future looks bright! :-)
I'm soo happy that I had faith in myself, my instincts and knowledge!
Believe in yourself and You can achieve great things!
2014 can be your greatest year ever!

Thank you! I think more people should stand up to vets and doctors. After all they are only humans and not gods.
Thanks for sharing your story. Glad that you stood up for your dog. We need to take a stand at times in life. Good you had the courage to express your desire to the vet. Debbie
Faith will carry you far especially when your natural instincts is guiding that faith.
