The two main tracking softwares that people use are Google Analytics and the Jetpack plugin. Google Analytics is well worth learning to add to your site.

Jetpack may slow down a big site a bit but usually is a good choice. You will need to create an account at WordPress.com to allow the tracking to work with this plugin.

But I think you have to do the BackWPup plugin...Welshy has a tutorial on that plugin...before you add Google Analytics. If I were really clever, I could give you the link to Welshy's tutorial, but I still don't know how to do that...
