A Comment About Commenting
Comments are the lifeblood of a blog. They demonstrate an active community. They help with rankings. And they give you insight about what you are doing right and what you can improve on your site.
One aspect I like about WA is the readiness by so many members to leave comments. In fact, many of the training modules encourage members to leave comments and ask for comments in return. This is great and every time I have asked for comments, other members were more than willing to oblige.
But...not all comments are equal. I often receive comments on posts that seem to be written in a hurry and without really adding any value to the discussion. If you have asked for comments from the WA community before, you probably know the types of comments I am referring to. They are usually very nice and positive but without much substance. Statements like "I like the design of your site. Keep up the great work." or "I really like your blog. Your theme looks very nice." I consider comments like these empty calories and have stopped approving them.
So I would like to ask anybody reading this blog post to only write meaningful comments. Comments that add something to the discussion. I know, I know...those comments take more time as they will require you to spend time to really read a post and then carefully think about the best way to respond with a quality comment. I do believe that this time is well spent though.
If you take time to comment in a meaningful way that adds real value to a post's discussion, the person who owns that blog will feel obliged to do the same on your blog. It is the law of reciprocity. We feel obliged to pay back...in the same way that we received. So the more meaningful your comments on other blogs will be, the more meaningful comments you will receive.
So, if I haven't turned you totally off commenting on my blog now, feel free to visit www.sennhauser.com (about Presentation and Demo Skills) or www.baanajarn.com (about Teaching English in Thailand) and leave a meaningful comment on any post of your liking. Then, come back here and post the link to your own site so I can return the favor. :)

Hi Claudio, very true. I feel though that many people like to start with something positive and encouraging (which is really meant!) and only after that come with what they hope is some constructive criticism. So, we should not stop reading just because somebody started off in this way.
On another note, I know that a lot of people have difficulties in being really critical in writing and especially having to do so out in the open and for everybody to see. These might be persons who perceive criticism in an altogether different way.
I agree with what you say above, Jerry. I have no issue with short, praising comments in the various places here within WA. Just with those left on our websites, because they can appear spammy (which can be counterproductive), even though they are extremely well meant.
Hey Sennhauser, you definitely made some very noteworthy points here, and I do believe in the law of reciprocity as well, but I think that people do it sometimes because they may not know exactly what to say. i'm sure if they take the time to really think about it, that they will definitely find something meaningful that they can say, but then again, it could take up a lot of their time as well which could be focused on working on their site. I guess they are being generous by deciding to visit your blog and leave a comment. Nothing in life is granted in my opinion. But anyways, that is besides the point. I really do appreciate those who take the time to leave comments, especially on other people's sites because that is what people value the most here (input on their progress). I saw both of your sites, took a short glance actually, and I am going to leave some very great comments on them once I look more into them. They are definitely very aesthetically pleasing, and they draw people's attention. Good luck, and thanks a ton for the blog it was very interesting :)
I agree with you, Florida: people definitely mean well with any blog-post comment. That's why I was hesitant to bring this up here.
I also agree that leaving a meaningful comment takes time which could be perhaps better used working on one's own site. That's why I think that boilerplate comments should not be written, because they take time to write as well, just not as much as a more thorough one.
Perhaps I will delete this blog post here, as I don't really want to open a can of worms. I am very thankful to be part of such a great community and received many great comments to posts I have made as a result of it.
And many thanks for your compliment about my websites. I look forward to reading, approving, answering your future comments on my sites...and returning the favor. :)
You don't have to take it down, it was not offensive at all. Just wanted to give my thoughts that's all :) I'm sure others would love to comment as well :D You are not offending anybody or violating any Terms of Service with this blog. I thought it was really good :D

I wholly agree with you Claudio. In the initial stage, I was guilty of it too. Now, I try my best to comment something more specific instead of being too general. Good post by you indeed Claudio, thanks for reminding us all.
