AI Lighting Prompts are Important

Why Lighting Is One of the Most Powerful Parts of an AI Prompt
Introduction
When I first started creating AI images, I focused almost entirely on the subject.
I might write something like:
"A blue heron standing beside a waterfall."
The images were nice enough, but many felt a little flat. Something was missing.
Then I started learning more about prompt engineering and discovered that one of the biggest differences between an ordinary AI image and one that feels alive is often something photographers have understood for years...
Lighting.
Just a few extra words describing the light can completely change the mood of an image.
Think Like a Photographer
If you've ever taken photographs, you already know this.
The same landscape can look completely different depending on:
- the time of day
- where the sun is
- whether it's cloudy
- whether the light is behind your subject
- whether the light is soft or harsh
When creating with an AI, it works much the same way. Instead of letting the AI guess the lighting, we can tell it exactly what kind of light we want.
Three Simple Types of Lighting
Soft Light
Simple Prompt - no lighting
Prompt: A woman enjoying a cup of tea in an English garden, with flowering trees.

But soft light creates a peaceful, gentle feeling.
Prompt: A woman enjoying a cup of tea in an English garden, illuminated by soft morning sunlight filtering through flowering trees, gentle shadows, warm reflections on fine china, peaceful atmosphere.
This type of lighting works beautifully for:
- tea scenes
- flowers
- portraits
- cozy interiors
Side Lighting
Light coming from one side creates depth and texture.
Plain
Example of plain prompt with no lighting text:
A majestic Great Blue Heron standing beside an Ozark waterfall.

Side Lighting
A majestic Great Blue Heron standing beside an Ozark waterfall, illuminated by warm sunlight from the left, revealing detailed feather textures and gentle shadows across the rocks.
Side lighting adds dimension that often makes an image feel more realistic.

Backlighting
Backlighting places the light behind the subject.
This creates glowing edges, often called rim lighting, and can produce a dramatic effect.
Example prompt:
A Great Blue Heron standing in shallow water at sunrise, the rising sun behind the bird creating glowing rim light around every feather, soft mist illuminated by golden light, cinematic atmosphere.

Backlighting is wonderful for:
- wildlife
- people
- sunsets
- silhouettes
A Small Change Makes a Big Difference
Compare these prompts.
Basic:
A majestic Great Blue Heron standing beside an Ozark waterfall.
Improved side lighting:
A majestic Great Blue Heron standing beside an Ozark waterfall, illuminated by warm sunlight from the left, revealing detailed feather textures and gentle shadows across the rocks.
Backlit:
A Great Blue Heron standing in shallow water at sunrise, the rising sun behind the bird creating glowing rim light around every feather, soft mist illuminated by golden light, cinematic atmosphere.
The subject hasn't changed.
The lighting has.
Yet the resulting image will usually feel much richer and more emotional.
My Challenge
The next time you create an AI image, don't change the subject.
Only change the lighting.
Try:
- soft morning light (Soft morning light refers to the gentle, diffused sunlight that occurs shortly after sunrise, often creating a warm, low-contrast glow that enhances colors and reduces harsh shadows. It is commonly used in photography and cinematography to achieve a natural, flattering look in images and scenes.)
- golden hour (Golden hour lighting refers to the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sunlight is softer and warmer, creating a golden hue. This lighting is ideal for photography as it reduces harsh shadows and enhances colors, making images more visually appealing)
- side lighting (Side lighting is a photography technique where light comes from one side of the subject, creating shadows that emphasize texture, depth, and dramatic contrast. It can be natural or artificial and is often used during golden hour for portraits or landscapes.)
- backlighting (Backlighting is a lighting technique where the light source is positioned behind the subject, illuminating it from the back. This creates a glowing effect around the edges of the subject, helping to separate it from the background and add depth to the image.)
You may be surprised how dramatically the mood changes.

Try It Yourself
Take one of your favorite prompts and generate it exactly as written.
Then generate it three more times by changing only the lighting:
- Soft morning light
- Side lighting from the left
- Backlighting at sunrise
Compare the four images.
Which one tells the best story?
Final Thoughts
One of the things I'm discovering is that writing better prompts isn't about using more words. It's about choosing better words.
Lighting is one of the easiest places to start, and it may be the quickest way to make your AI images look more professional.
In my next post, I'll look at another simple technique that can dramatically improve AI-generated images. Go to next post on "AI Prompting - Change the Angle, Change the Image.
