Where Do You Work?

I read a blog the other day about making sure that you have a space that you can call your workspace... and only using that as a workspace. For me, at the moment, it's just not possible in our house. I have a daughter who is 14 months and if she knows I am in the house, she wants me rather than the babysitter/caregiver!

So instead of working in my office which is downstairs and being disrupted, I tend to work in our bedroom... definitely not ideal but that should change once my daughter goes to nursery in September! Sometimes if you can't have the ideal, you just have to find a way and get on with it!

So, when I need to be at home - because I do three-way Skype calls with my clients and need quiet and a confidential space during that time, then I usually stay at home and work on my bed (shock horror! Not ideal at all - but unavoidable for now!).

Other times, when I don't need so much peace (and to feel like I have people around me!) I head to a local cafe called Cafe Rider! And yes, it's as cool as it's sounds. I have attached a couple of picture of my "office".

Plus, they make a mean cup of coffee....!!

Where do you work from? Is it the ideal workplace for you?

Between the Dogs, My Son's bags, my wife's desk which she crammed in my office, the spare chairs she stuck in there for the time being, I now have a little corner of my desk to use for myself, I can't do what Sarah does once I het the bed I'm out lol

haha! I know what you mean... even if I wanted to work in the office, I would find it hard to find a corner in there between the old car seat, travel cot that we are not using, the jumperoo that we never used because my daughter hated it and so on....!! It's the bed or a coffee shop..or nowhere!!! ;-)

Don't Laugh, I've been known to go sit in my car before, when ever I needed to make a call and didn't want barking dogs in the background, I sat in my car Plus you can buy a cd online that has typical office noise in the background to make it sound like you're in an office environment, but yeah I used my car as my office, you know what It works :) Just not quite as comfortable to sleep in lol

Oooh not laughing that CD sounds fab, by the way - my daughter screamed at the top of her lungs yesterday while I was on a call and I heard her a flight of stairs and two closed doors away... the caller was a bit confused with what was going on in the background!

ok maybe laughing a little bit ;-)

I would have told the caller on the other end that one of the girls got a raise ahd she rushed out of the office lol

See? I knew you would lol

Thanks Billy - that's just such a classic!! Working in my car from now on - parked on my driver, I still get wifi - and a office noise CD on in the background during calls!! :))))

Same side of the little table on my boat. I'd try to get out more, but there aren't any cafes around here.

Aha! Of course! ;-)

Still, it sounds lovely....! :)

Looks great, your improviced office;)

I work right in the livingroom, sometimes with all children around me, and that can run up to 8 at once, friends come over to play, grandchildren walk in, print some coloring pages in between, help them with lego or have to tie some laces, then back to "work" again, husband comes home, have a little chat, cuppa coffee, then back to "work", put the food on the stove, answer in between a bit of questions, email, etcetc.

Desk, and to the left my daycare table, and for prove the date of today
and on the screen your blog :))))

Thanks for the proof Loes! I believed you though!!! ;-)

Sounds like a lovely social workplace...! The kind of place I would like to work! :)

I don't know how you can concentrate with all that going on around you. Your powers of concentration are certainly way superior to mine :)

I have no problems at all with concentration, they can tear the place apart, and I am still not bothered :))

That's a blessing. I wish my brain was wired that way. I really have to force myself to concentrate at times.

My mom always says, it's a blessing for the person, but a curse for surrounders, my dad had the same gift;) and she was more then often annoyed, not getting his attention.

Amazing, you can park your car inside!

HAHA! Yes, but they won't let me park mine inside - it's not flash enough.... YET! ;-)

It soon will be!

I'm counting on it! :)

In the meantime, I have a pretty motivating view!

Where do you work from Lindon?

I work and live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I do most of my WA work outside in the garden.

Perfect!! And I love Brisbane too!

I used to go to my local Costa before my broadband was installed but now it's just from home......close to the coast so not too shabby!!

Cool office you have there Sarah, love the bikes and the Mustang...hope it's got air con!

Mark

Yes nice and cool (cool in both senses of the word!).

The thing I can't stand about Costa's is that you have to keep going up for another wifi access receipt every hour (or you do here in Dubai, anyway!) - really annoying!

Do you have a sea view, Mark?

My local Costa here recognises my phone or laptop every time I go in so no need for that although other coffee houses give you a code to access their's each time you visit.

When I'm in town, if there's no hotspot available and 4g is poor, I can just go and stand outside Costa and use their's!!

Don't have a sea view but it's only 5 mins from the coast here Sarah, not too bad!

Not too bad at all!! Yes, at my local "coffice" (the one I am at today) - I have their password on both my laptop and phone - oh and my ipad too!!! ;-)

"Coffice"....I like that Sarah and I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of coffices around the world, especially where travel bloggers stop off to do their day's (an hour!) work.

I sit in my reclining chair with my laptop on a USB fan tray. If I need quiet, I shut the 3 dogs in the conservatory and close the doors. When the sun is out I'll sit on a sun lounger in the garden. I doubt I could have done this when my 4 kids were children!

Haha! What shut your 4 kids in the conservatory - no probably not! Lol!! The sitting outside theme is coming out again here - I have to admit, I find sitting outside very inspiring! :)

I have 2 places that I work from.
My dedicated workspace where I do all my physical work from, and the 2nd one is at night in bed, where I do a lot of thinking. LoL
At my age I only sleep and think in bed. :))
Have a great day in Dubai.
-Theuns

Haha! ;-)

I am not going to comment further on this....!

Like as you I don't have a proper working place which I agree should be a quiet place. I know how it is to work around children as I have a 1 yr old daughter.. But many others have similar problems and even worse so I won't complain to much.

Yes it's too true! I was reading the advice that you should go somewhere quiet but not in a place that was used for another purpose - and I realised that if I looked for that place in my house, I would just never work! Sometimes, you just need to make do with what you have... and work!!

At 67 years my wife and I have downsized our house. I call it my lock up and go -We like taking short holiday breaks as often as I can. My favourite place to work is my kitchen -its the best place to grab a snack,
To charge up my batteries - I sit in the garden with the birds to keep me company. I take my laptop with me when we go away for 6 weeks to visit my grandchildren abroad. You can work anywhere

Nice! Working outside with the birds... I love the sound of that! I would probably do that once the heat of the summer in Dubai has passed by!

And yes, you can work from anywhere - important to be able to find a way to concentrate!

Good blog, I converted a coat cupboard into an office. It's tiny lol, it kind of does the job, I'm not totally concealed in but everyone knows that when my head is stuck in there I'm working. Before this I used to have my pc on the kitchen table, but I constantly got interrupted and I was less disciplined. So, my tiny refurbished cupboard, even with my bum sticking out made a huge difference.

Great story! It's whatever works for you that's important right?

I do have a funny image of you working in your converted cupboard now! haha!

lol I did think about that, :)

Classic "does my bum look big in this" cupboard Sharon??

lol Yes, but my chair is comfy hehe...

Comfy is best Sharon!!
