How can I make my website private for now?

Hi All

I'm in the process of building my first website (very slowly I might add!) and I don't really want people looking at it yet as there is very little on thereat the moment and I'm constantly adding /removing bits.

How can I make my website private for now? Can I make it private and add a message such as "website is under construction, please return at {such a date} and in the meantime email {my email address}?

Thanks in advance.

Ruth :)

Hello Ruth! Just use your draft button and not publish. Do this once you go to your dashboard. Have a marvelous and blessed day!

Hey Ruth,

Looks like you've figured out what you want to do with your website - so that's great.

My 2 cents - it really doesn't matter who sees your website, especially in the beginning. Your website will change over time and your content will get better and better as you add more pages.

If you're testing things out, then what you could do is have two websites. Your main one - you can call "production" and the second "test".

Do all your testing on the "test" website and then once you're happy you can implement those changes in "production", that way you can be creative without worrying about mistakes.

Remember you can create as many siterubix websites as you like, so you can have several test sites if you wanted.

Just a suggestion.

Best,
Frank

Ruth ... in the beginning, not too many people are going to find you site so a little message on each page that says under construction is fine. Most of the people on your site will be your fellow WA members and you want them to see it so they can make suggestions, and help you with problems and issues, and give your site some comments and feedback! Hi Ruth,

I think you're asking 2 different things here: you want to be private for now, but make a message that says "website is under construction?"

If someone found your site that says your site is under construction, then it's not so private - they found you! =)

In any case, you have a couple of options.

1) if you want to remain private:

you can go to SETTINGS --> READING and check the box that says "Discourage search engines from indexing this site."

That will keep your site private while you work on it.

2) If you want people to find your site that says it's under construction and come back at (date):

==> create a static home page that says the message you want
==> create a free siterubix site with the same theme you chose and use it as a "test" site
==> keep it private like you did in step 1 so it doesn't get indexed.

Hope this helps!

-Jimmy

P.S. For future reference, try making this a question instead of a blog, more people will see it.

Thanks Jimmy.

It was the content I wanted to keep private but after reading hippywot's reply, I'll probably just leave it.

As for creating this as a blog, oopsie... I have a lot to learn! :)

Great info Jimmy. Thanks for solving my problem. Occasionly get a client that wants to keep there site private till approved. Besides, Jay says develop on a private site and go live after you are paid.

It doesn't really matter about people seeing your site as it evolves to be honest. The reason for this is that you wont have very much traffic to begin with.

However if you want to keep it all private, under the draft button where you save pages and posts, there's an option to make the page private. you can keep it private until you are ready to release the work, then you just change the setting to publish.

However bad you feel your content might be at times, put it out there and don't worry. Your can go back to things, in fact you will go back to things and improve pages, add links all that sort of stuff. The longer it's out there the better your site ranks over time, and improvements count too.

Best of luck :)

Thanks for your reply.

I'll leave it then if that's what others are doing, I just lack confidence - #needtogrowapair lol :)
