Comments and Feedback. Its hard to get criticism
While the comment system is good here and I like the give and take system, I have this feeling I can't shake that its rare to get real quality comments still. A lot of what i'm getting is either vague, im-just-writing-this-cos-its-a-requirement type comment or ones which are really positive. Im not saying positive is good, but id love someone to tell me that some of my posts dont make sense or are awful. This is the way to grow. I dont want to develop a false chip on my shoulder

I do my best to add something constructive, interesting, and search engine worthy when I comment. If I can't add something intelligent to the conversation then I'll move on without commenting. Yesterday I checked the new comment system two dozen times throughout the day and could only find 3 posts to comment on. Sometimes there just isn't anything there I could honestly contribute to.
I think it might come down to people wanting not to offend someone (you). Or they think all they can do is leave positive comments.
When I comment I leave my honest opinion - I'm pretty sure that's what the poster wants.
The best engaging comments are ones that have different opinions. You don't want a section of "yes man" comments. Not much fun to read that when everyone agrees with you, does not ask questions or is scared to offer their own opinion.
I have noticed however if someone does leave a comment that asks questions or may disagree, others will chime in. Lots of people don't want to be first or go against the grain.
Now with all that said, unfortunately you have zero control over the comments you get.
I just left a comment on your site and no, I am not writing it because it's a requirement. I really like the topic you wrote about time and can't find anything awful to say - at the moment anyway. Keep posting more, maybe I can find something to 'disagree' with you :))
I have that same feeling sometimes, that I'm not sure if the comment that I'm receiving is completely honest. I mean positive comments are great if they're are real, but I can actually see when the positive comment is honest or just a few lines like great info, easy to read and reciting a few lines from within the content.
I really like it when people ask questions, in my opinion that's the whole reason of the comment section, people who end up on your site ( through search engines, not through WA), are mostly going to use this section when they have questions! Not so much congratulating you on the quality or readability of your content.
Good points, ..... :) what is that addy of yours....................... :P
Seriously though, I agree with you, the comments should be real. I read every page I comment on and try to point out something that may be lacking in the article or compliment them when they are spot on.

Bring it on, I will send you some awful comments. Just kidding:))))
I agree with you, but, you see, as this is not a feedback but a comment thread , people may just agree with everything you say as they want their comments to be approved by you. Hopefully, everyone will get the drift after some time how to be the best commenter.
I enjoy some kind of interaction , question-answer type of comment. But what I've noticed that even some people ask questions in their comment and I reply ( I have a plugin installed that sends people email notification when their comment gets answered or approved) , there is no reply back( only once I received a reply from the same person which was rather nice) . So it shows that there is no real interest in this.
Unfortunately, as Leoemery noticed, you have no control over it.
but, in my opinion, it is still better to have some comments than none.
