Wood Inlay Art
Lately my husband has been spending a lot of time doing marquetry, otherwise known as wood inlay art. He's on a roll now with prehistoric art that he finds online, but he's done other things too. He downloads an image, sizes it to what he wants, and traces it onto tracing paper. Then he cuts that into a gazillion little pieces of paper and uses them as the models for his collection of different local woods. Every now and then, he and a friend go out into the forests and find more kinds of wood.
All that is preliminary. Then he chooses background wood and removes little pieces of it for the woods of different colors to fit into.
His woodworking area is a converted garage directly below our home office, and sometimes I hear grumbling coming up through the floor. This isn't an easy thing he's doing. I am no artist and I know I could never do it! Here is the tree of life, one of my favorites of those he has done recently:
