what do you WANT vs what do you NEED

I think this is a constant challenge in any area of life:

What people WANT and what people NEED are 2 different things.

I write this post to hear YOUR thoughts on this topic and to hear how do YOU handle this within your business.

It would be ignorant to say, "This doesn't apply to my life/business" because I'm pretty sure this same thing applies to YOUR life pretty dramatically as well.

People Want $50 Rather Than $1,000

My YouTube channel is all about making money online. I show people different ways they can use to make money from home.

What people want:

Easy money opportunities that pay instantly without any skills and with as little effort as possible.

What people need:

Stable online income streams that can give them money to pay for all their needs (Rent, food, family, hobbies, healthcare costs, etc.).

My subscribers even said that they'd prefer $50 rather than $1,000 even though both would require the same effort.

Below is the proof:

I Gave What People WANTED

I made that poll in September or October.

It was one of many proofs that people rather wanted small money than big money. I received 100's of comments from my subscrbers requesting me to show easy money websites.

Therefore, I answered people's requests.

I started showing those easy money websites that pay them money for

  • Watching videos
  • Clicking ads
  • Downloading apps
  • Answering questions
  • Playing games
  • etc.

After publishing numerous videos of those easy money websites, I start now slowly seeing people's minds changing. They start to realize that they need rather big money opportunities than easy money websites.

They start to lear that clicking ads won't pay their bills.

In recent comments and polls people have requested more affiliate marketing tutorials and other similar things.

But the change is happening only to some extent...

Newcomers still prefer to see the "easy money websites" because they haven't yet learned that what they want is different than what they need.

The Reality

Affiliate marketing is a viable way to make a life-changing income.

10,000's of people have done it and every year more and more people are earning a handsome income online with affiliate marketing.

However, when I publish a video teaching affiliate marketing strategies it gets 10 times fewer views than a video where I show how to make money online watching videos (or doing other extremely easy things that even a 7-year-old kid could do to make money).

As far as I know, the same phenomenon happens pretty much in every industry. I hear content creators talking about the same issue all the time.

What people want is different than what people need.

Let me tell you about a crazy example...

He Earned $10,000's But Ended Because...

Recently, I listened to an interview from a cryptocurrency YouTuber who had ended his channel partially because of this phenomenon.

He got so tired that people didn't want to hear what they really needed to hear.

Of course, It's sad that he ended partially because of that but his example illustrates this challenge.

If he created a video telling, "This cryptocurrency seems potential. Perhaps it will go up in value because of x, y and z reasons." People loved that content and it got him up to 250,000 views for a single video.

But when he created a video telling about risk management, planning and other "not-so-exciting-things" people didn't want to watch them.

People only wanted to hear "What's gonna be the next hot crypto opportunity?!?!"

Again...

People what people WANTED to hear was different than what people NEEDED to hear.

Other Examples:

Language learning

  • What people WANT to hear:

Become fluent in French in less than 30 days while listening to this audio when you're sleeping! (No effort. Easy. Fast.)

  • What people NEED to hear:

Practice every single day. Talk with native speakers. Challenge yourself constantly.

-

Fitness:

  • What people WANT to hear:

This hot & new magic supplement helps you to lose weight faster than you can imagine!

  • What people NEED to hear:

Exercise minimum 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes. Eat salad & vegetables daily. Minimize sugar. Make sure you get enough protein. Sleep regularly 7-8 hours every night.

-

This list could go on and on.

What people WANT to hear tends to be different than what people NEED to hear.

What's YOUR Strategy to Solve This Challenge?

I'd love to hear how do YOU solve this within your business.

Don't just pass the question saying, "this doesn't apply to my business" because I'm pretty sure it does. If it doesn't apply to your business, I'd love to hear what is such industry.

Dean Graziosi said, "Sometimes you can sell people what they want but give them what they need."

For example, I show people what they want: easy money websites. But at the end of the video, I also show them what they need: How to make big and stable money online.

That's one way and I'm also testing other ways...

Tell me in the comments:

How do YOU solve the issue of "What people want" vs "What people need" within your business and marketing?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

- Roope "Studying human psychology" Kiuttu

PS. I don't pretend to be immune to this issue. I notice often that what I wanted was different than what I needed.

I believe it's human nature and every single human being has this same challenge to some extent, including you... ;)

Dean is right and what you mention is spot on too about my business in personal training business. I use both ways. I give clients a quick and easy win each day then give them what they actually need. This works only if this way was clearly communicated right in the beginning. :)

Thanks for sharing Kartini!

Interesting. I agree that it is very difficult to get people to choose what they need.
My personal position is that I never make-up peoples minds for them.
I will show you the options, but at the end of the day, it remains your choice.
in the end the majority of people will buy what they want, not necessarily what the need.
And I will sell it to them - punto final

I like your post, it's very educative. However, I think humans are very complex. They want and at the same time they need. So as an affiliate marketer, it's up to you to supply both their needs and and wants and make your money. You have to balance your strategy to make sure you get the money. At the end if make small money and big money to succeed, that is your strategy. You don't have to wait for 10 years before making money. If possible don't overlook the small small money along the way. Remember as a premium member you are paying for your monthly membership. You can use the small small genuine money to finance that if you have the know how. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

This was long but really good read, Roope. Adjusting my wants and needs and knowing what they are is what got me to finally get off the hesitation and take the plunge into this online journey. Thanks for the share, learning from experienced online marketers like yourself is the best.

From want to need is a process. To want something is a simple motive, eg. I want to buy a shirt. The buyer of the shirt could be is not lacking in a shirt to wear on.
Need is complex in itself because it consists more than want. It is a requirement ( eg. earning money). Eat, play, drink, house, rental, transportation.....and many more. Can one ignore this? Nope

Great thoughts Leow! Thanks for sharing
