Block Editor (Gutenberg) Tips #1 - Why You Should Start Using it Sooner Than Later

I'm a Classic Editor fan and I'm sure most people are. It's much easier to use and less complicated than the Block Editor, but I'm starting to use the Block Editor more and more. The reason...

It has more functionality than the classic editor and I learned to create simple but beautiful landing pages without Elementor. (The block editor does not replace page builders like Elementor)

I still have Elementor to build more complicated landing pages, but it also takes more time.

There is another big reason why I'm "weaning" myself off Classic Editor.

Will Classic Editor Become a Thing of the Past?

I've seen posts where people claim the Classic Editor plugin will only be supported until the end of 2021 and others think it will go beyond that, depending on user demand.

To put it simply for newbies and non-techies like me, the only thing that makes the classic editor still available to us is the Classic Editor plugin that is automatically installed. If you deactivate the Classic Editor plugin, you can only use the block editor.

WordPress, Themes & Plugin developers currently have to cater for both types of editors.

I personally think they will give everyone enough time to start adapting and make themes and plugins more compatible to the new block editor and then discontinue the classic editor at some point in the future?

Preparing Myself

I've decided it's time to use the block editor more for just in case. I never liked it much but it did improve a lot and it starts to grow on me.

I'll dish out a few tips in upcoming posts for those who want to "evolve" with me:)

What is your take on this?

Do you think the Classic Editor will be phased out?

Thanks

Rika

I am new to WA. I just got my basic Website built and saw the training on Block Editor. I was wondering what the story was. So, it seems that Classic Editor will soon reach EOL (end of life). So, learning Block Editor now would be wise. Thanks for the heads up. :-)

Block Editor is also more versatile, Don.

Block editor has a learning curve and is not as easy to use. I still prefer the classic editor, but I suppose we need to evolve with the times:)

So I hear. However, I would rather tackle Block Editor sooner than later. I am pretty techie. So, I should be able to learn it with some research combined with trial and error. I do appreciate your comments and insight. Thanks!!!

I am writing my first post with the block editor and I do not like it. I don't like that I can't see the dashboard. I have no idea how to replace plug ins like Table of Contents and Tiny MCeditor that offered better tools.
It seems like even when you get to know where everything is, you're always clicking around to do anything.
Very time consuming.
But I do think it will be the only way to go, I just don't understand the mind that created it.
Why.

Hi Dianne,

It's not as easy to use as the classic editor and not all plugins are compatible with it. I still prefer the classic editor but was able to create a nice landing page only using the block editor.

Thanks for your input. Have a great day!

Erika, I think the block editor will be " the only one". I have used a similar block editor with another website that I am the webmaster of, but I have to say that I don´t like it very much. I am not a block editor "from nature´s" side 😃.

Bur after using Elementor a bit during last week, I have seen some of the possibilities and advantages of a block editor and will begin to use the block editor and /or Elementor from now on.

I was also not a big fan utnil recently. You can definitely do more with the block editor and I removed a couple of plugins since using block editor.

I just have to mention the website I'm working on now is new and it's easier for me to remove plugins and edit my already existing posts.

My websites are also quite new, so it wouldn´t be a big job switching to the block editor. My thoughts last week about this was the same as yours :-)

Roy and Rika,

I am playing around with Block Editor this weekend so I can migrate and I do agree with you both.

There is a lot more potential.
I also think that Classic Editor will become a thing of the past.

Thank you both.

That is great, Cassi :-)

Hi, Rika. I changed my only website to the Block Editor, but, to be honest, I don't have a good comprehension of the difference between the Classic and Block - still learning - but changed over based on Chrystopher's recommendation. I trust that it will become clear to me with the use.

Hi Earl,

There is a big difference. The classic editor got fewer options and its easier to use. It just give you options to add headers and images. That's now if you have no plugins to do other things.

The block editor create blocks for various types of stuff and you have customization options for each block. More difficult to use but with more options.

Thanks for your response, Rika. Does a block refer to a section of a blog/post, is the block randomly placed, and if so, can I designate another block within that same blog/post to customize it? I hope you won't mind taking the time to help me out a little with this. BTW, is there a link that I can use to read about how this work?

I've been using the block editor almost exclusively since it first became available as the Gutenberg plugin.

Having some people using the block editor and others using the Classic Editor plugin really makes helping people with their sites much harder as I don't know which editor they're using. So I'm not answering as many questions at WA as I used to.

I've done several videos and tutorials on using the block editor. Just use the grey search box above and type "marionblack gutenberg" (without the quotes) to find them.

Thanks for sharing Marion:)

Do you use one of the block plugins? I use the Ultimate Block plugin and it adds more functionality. I actually love it.

You can add things like testimonials, reviews with schema, table of contents, social sharing, how-to blocks, nice call-to-actions and much more if you add one plugin.

I was able to disable a few plugins since I decided to use block editor more.
