What's New on YouTube in 2023

YouTube is rolling out several updates in 2023 to help creators connect with their audience and give viewers a better experience. These updates include new formats for video descriptions, scrollable descriptions, easier social media linking, and the ability to edit Shorts to link to other videos.

New Formats for Video Descriptions

YouTube is adding new formatting options for video descriptions to make them more scannable for viewers.

This includes:

  • Scrollable descriptions so longer descriptions don't take up the whole page
  • Formatting for social media links with the platform's logo for better visibility
  • Overall improved readability with headings, lists, and bolding

These updates allow creators to organize their video description into sections, call out important links, and generally make it easier for viewers to find key information.

Linking Shorts to Longer Videos

Starting on August 17, 2023, creators can add a link from their Shorts to one of their longer videos. This appears as a clickable link in the Shorts player and helps direct interested viewers to more content.

This is an easy way to leverage the popularity of Shorts to promote your other videos. It helps convert viewers from the short-form to long-form content.

With persistence and solid content, you can progressively grow your subscriber base over time.

Creating a YouTube Account

To access most YouTube features, you need to create a Google account.

This includes options like:

  • Liking and disliking videos
  • Subscribing to channels
  • Playlist creation

  • Live streaming

  • Appealing Content ID claims

It also unlocks advanced account features once you build up your channel history.

To verify your account, you will be asked to enter a phone number to receive a verification code via text or call. This process confirms your identity and prevents spam/abuse issues.

YouTube will not sell or share your personal information from account verification.

New Option to Sign Into YouTube

YouTube is testing prominent "Sign In" prompts across the platform. This optional prompt recommends signing in to access personalized features like:

  • Video recommendations based on watch history and likes
  • Following subscriber content
  • Playlists, Watch Later, and other collections
  • Community interactions like commenting and posting

If you don't want to sign-in right away, you can dismiss the prompt to continue using YouTube. You can also use YouTube's Incognito Mode to browse more privately without impacting your viewing history and recommendations.

Getting Started With YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts allows anyone to shoot short mobile videos up to 60 seconds long using YouTube's multi-segment camera and editing tools. Shorts offer a new way for creators to engage with the YouTube audience.
