Which plug in do you guys use to cloak your affiliate links?

Another thoughtful post.

Do you mean something like http://mydomain.com/my-custom-affiliate-slug ? That would actually be nice. Not mandatory or required, but nice. And I can see where you coming from in terms of people removing the aff-id. I don't know if that really happens that often to be worried about it, but I can see your concern.

Why would you add rel="nofollow", though?

The rel="nofollow" thing is because google doesn't like sponsored posts with links pointing out. Google sees this as selling links to manipulate rankings and punish sites that are caught doing this.

Affiliate links pass link juice like any other link so its a type of "paid link" even though the intention is not to manipulate rankings but to sell a product and earn a commission. As many people spam around their affiliate links the site hosting the offer (not the affiliate site but the program site itself ) might eventually get penalized by Google. So if your site is linking to a penalized site your rankings may drop or your site might get penalized. For this reason you should add rel="nofollow" to all affiliate links that go out of your site to offers. This way if the "offer site" gets hit by a Google penalty your site will remain safe in the eyes of Google.

Hmmm... That is interesting. I'd love to hear other marketer's thoughts on this, as I haven't heard that around here on WA before! Your explanation makes a lot of sense!

Why do you want to cloak them?

Its common practice to cloak them to avoid having ugly looking links pointing out of your site. Some people also remove the affiliate id portion of the link to avoid generating commissions for affiliates . However if you promote amazon stuff don't cloak them. Add only rel="nofollow" to the link.

I work for an affiliate network. I don't mind if you use something like Pretty Links to shorten your links, (FYI, Pinterest hates shortened links) but there's a difference between cloaking and shortening.

Who are "some people" remove affiliate links?

People that can spot affiliate links and don't want you to earn a commission. Some people are like that even though it doesn't hurt them in anyway. But well there are people and there are people if you know what I mean.

I guess I'm unclear about that. If someone comes to your site, they are able to remove the link?

No, but they can copy the link to their clipboard, paste into their browser bar and then remove the ?aff-id=yourid part... I think that is the idea here.

Not something that happens often though. Like extremely rare.

Luckily they are the minority. Don't make yourself crazy trying to worry about a few folks - focus on the bigger audience. The crazies will always be with us, but best to ignore rather than risk the rest of your site's performance.
