Grateful for Modern Medicine

A couple of months ago, I developed a nasty-looking growth on my right forearm.

It grew at an alarming rate and was very, very tender.

Seriously ugly too.

On Monday, I consulted a skin specialist, who diagnosed it as an aggressive squamous cell carcinoma that needed to be removed asap.

Yesterday (Thursday) I underwent the surgery.

It took about half an hour under local anesthetic. It was totally removed and shipped off for a biopsy.

Then the surgeon sutured up the wound (very neatly) dressed it and told me to keep the dressing dry until Sunday.

Because of Australia's excellent health-care system, the whole process, from diagnosis to surgery, cost me $75.

Much to be grateful for, indeed.

An attitude I try to take into my online businesses.

Hi Phil!

That must have been pretty scary! Awesome that you got it removed quickly. Glad that you have an excellent health-care system in Australia and that it did not cost you an arm and a leg. Health-care cost in the US is out of control.

I wish you a speedy recovery and no more of that kind of growth! Blessings and prayers your way!

Wishing you the very best!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Thanks, Nichola. Not really scary, but glad to have it removed. It's Sunday morning here and I'm looking forward to removing the dressing under the shower and seeing how it's healing.

2

You are welcome. Indeed!

2

I've removed the dressing and replaced it with a smear of antiseptic and 3 band-aids. It looks very neat and healing well.

2

Awesome! Glad that all is going well! Blessings and healing!

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad that you caught it in time and that the procedure went smoothly. Being in the U.S., I'm always so stunned at how much we have to spend on healthcare costs compared to other countries. I'm glad to hear that Australia has such an excellent healthcare system. I hope your recovery is going well.

3

Thank you so much, Kory. I'm looking forward to removing the dressing tomorrow (Sunday). The good thing here is that healthcare isn't a political issue. All sides of politics agree that it's vital to have a good one that people can afford.

Far out!
I had some carcinomas removed when I was living in Mackay.
At about $1100 a time. $400 per biopsy which wasn't claimable under medicare, and $700 for the procedure.
I did get a little back for the procedure.
Then someone suggested an ointment and gave me some to try.
I had an annoying lump behind my right ear so gave it a try.
It was painful for about a week, then the pain went, and feeling around with my hand out popped this ugly-looking thing about the size of a marble.
At the next check-up, the doctor was looking around that spot, I am sure he knew what I had done but never said anything.

Michael.

I don't understand why it would cost that much, Mick. As I said, the total bill for me was $75 and certainly nothing for the biopsy.

I've heard of a black ointment that's supposed to be very effective if applied early. My GP (female) is very open to alternative treatments.

3

Ok Phil,
They used to send the biopsy's across town for analysis, then make an appointment for me once they got the results.
It all had to happen within a week if the result was positive.
One time, he didn't worry about a biopsy and just operated.
That still cost $700. (or $770? I am not sure now).
This was back in 2015.
Nobody I talked to thought the cost was unusual.
Damn good doctor though.
He used to be the English Olympic team doctor.
Smart Scan the clinic was called, there are probably one or three on the Sunny coast.

2

Haven't heard of them. I go to Noosaville 7 Day Medical Centre and have found them excellent. I do have an age-related concession card, but wouldn't have thought it made that much difference in cost.

3

Yeah ok, you could say they really stitched me up.

1

Haha.

2

Wow Phil! Thanks for sharing! I am so glad to hear they took such great care of you and not only that but not leaving you with a stressful large media bill!
I am in the hole $5k trying to figure out some mystery illness and have more tests to be run including an endoscopy next month. America really needs to do something better about our healthcare system.
Heal up and feel great!

Braeanne

2

Thanks so much for your kind thoughts, Braeanne.

The cost of most tests (ultrasound, radiology, x-rays etc.) here is totally covered by the healthcare system.

3

That is amazing! I am so glad to hear some positivity! You will be well from here my friend!

2

Took the dressing off this morning and replaced it with a smear of antiseptic and three bandaids. It's looking good with very neat stitching and no swelling.

2

Hi Phil, it is always wise to seek medical advice regardless of how we feel about something, "oh that will be ok, it will get better, I`ll give it a week then go to the doctors". Never put off what can be done today, well done done Phil, glad everything went well. Have a great relaxing day with plenty of pampering.🙏🙏

2

Not much pampering happening but I appreciate your thoughts.

3

All the best.

2

my sister got hers cut off too. It grew back faster and now...Kristy Sherman RIP. I dont mean to scare you, but next time when its small seek out the "quackery" modern medicine claims Black Salve. IT WORKS WHEN ITS SMALL. We use it all the time for anthing that wont go awy. and dont ask your freakin doctor cuz he'll tell you is homeopathic quackery...but trust me if u can and seek it out. My brother Curtis Harmon from InnerEnergy can help you. p.s. it looks ugly while its pulling cancer out. He is a Sedona Arizona Natural rememdies guru.

2

Thank you, Jeanine. I've heard good things about black salve before. I'll certainly consider it if there's a next time. And my "freakin' doctor" is very open to alternative treatments so I'll ask HER what SHE thinks next time I see her.

2

you are on prayer list at my church...we all will come together to pray over you, because "when two or more come together in His name, so shal it be".

2

How generous of you to do that. Thank you.

2

Hi, Phil

I'm really happy to hear that your problem worked out well for you.

Any tender and “seriously ugly” skin lesion that grows at “an alarming rate” needs to be evaluated asap.

Aggressive (high-grade) SCC can move (metastasize) to other areas of the body.

Sunscreen is a must!

I'm not giving medical advice online. This is more like a public service message.

I agree with you about the $75. The diagnostics and surgical treatment would have cost a fortune in the USA.

Stay Well! 😎
Frank
