"Shiny Object Syndrome"

Wow! Where do I start? As an affiliate marketer, I'm pretty sure that we all have suffered from this problem. I will speak for myself and say that I have always heard about this topic when I first got started with affiliate marketing, but I didn't realize how "real" it was! I was so eager to learn as much as I could and I truly wanted to help as many people as I could, so I started purchasing pretty much every SaaS product and training program known to man!

After about 5 months or so of doing this and after spending thousands of dollars, the light bulb finally went off and I realized how ineffective I had become because I had purchased so many different solutions, that I couldn't figure out which ones to use and I even forgot about a lot of them! When you're seeing so many different and new solutions that could potentially solve problems, all you want to do is get them and start helping people. I always watched videos and training from super affiliates and they constantly kept saying "focus" on one thing and master it - I actually believed them, but I still kept on buying many different solutions! So, after promoting quite a few different products and not making a lot of sales and being somewhat overwhelmed, I realized that I really needed to focus on one or two different solutions and get to work!

Only when I realized this and started to focus on one solution did I start to become more successful and that was the turning point in my journey! I would like to share some things I did to help me successfully get out of the rat race known as "shiny object syndrome". First, I unsubscribed from more than 60 email lists, I STOPPED watching webinars, I purchased a significantly lower amount of solutions/tools, and I remained LASER focused on one or two different tools. Just to give you a quick snapshot of the scope of this problem, I used a word document to track all my purchases and it was more than 50 pages long!!

If you find yourself wanting to purchase solutions, there is really nothing wrong with that (and you shouldn't purchase too many), but I would suggest that if you do go down that path, make sure you watch reviews of the product/tool you're planning on purchasing and know exactly what's in the sales funnel and how much the upsells and downsells are. You will want to check and see what the current refund rate is for the particular product/tool is and if it's more than 7%, I wouldn't buy it. You will also want to know exactly what the refund policy is and how long it is (15 days, 30 days, etc.). You should also know who to contact for a refund as it's best to contact the seller directly as opposed to contacting PayPal first as that could hurt the sellers business... Pay very close attention to the sales copy, what I found is that they will tell you everything that the product/tool will do, but most times, they won't tell you that all the functionality is included in the upsells (or OTO1, OTO2, OTO3, etc.). I remember buying the Front End (FE) product/tool thinking that I would have everything mentioned in the sales letter, but I was wrong.

I certainly hope this post helps someone who may be going through what I have been through because I want others to learn from my mistakes. If you have any other ways to avoid this syndrome, please feel free to comment because I would like to help as many people as I can avoid this situation. Thanks for reading!
