Can diversity help you advance professionally?
I believe I'm here because of 4 major milestiones in my life and they are all related to cultural diversity.
1. At the age of 16, I set out to travel around Europe together with a dozen friends, visting 6 countries, in 10 days. Up until then I was brought up in one city, one country, only knowing the customs that applied to my environment. Leaving that to explore other cultures opened my mind and expanded my horizon. It made me what I call a culturally intelligent individual.
2. After finishing my university studies, I actually moved to another country, Athens-Greece in 2009. Lived there for 4 years and worked in a rich multicultural environment where I've met and made friends with people from other continents this time, not just Europe. Thus becaomse an even stronger culturally intelligent individual.
3. Studies show that diverity & cultural intelligence fosters creativity and innovation. That sparked the entrepreneurial spirit in me, so in 2013 I moved back to my home country to venture into my own business. My home country is Romania, however by ethnicity I'm Hungarian, which makes me bilingual - shout out to all bilinguals here!
4. By the end of 2016, I successfully managed to fail my company, forcing me to go back to work. I not only changed my professional environment but changed the country with it. Moved to Germany in January 2017 and for the past two years I focused on building skills, my network and better my competencies. During my search I met amazingly experienced senior folds that I learned I lot from, discovered the notion of vision and mission and seemingly discovered myself as well. With that I gained back the courage and confidence to start a new venture which brought me here to WA.
Diversity helped me get insights into different ways of doing things, and by combining the knowledge I was able to succeed in my professional career and gain advantage over others. Now joining WA and seeing this utterly diverse community makes me feel confident that I"ll be able to learn a lot from you all and succeed together.

Like you have been to many Countries, diversity I feel is now part of our normal everyday life.

Diversity has the potential to make us all better human beings and affect all areas of our life including professionally if we are open minded enough to learn from others.
Some people are so close-minded, they'll never see past their own tribe/nationality/culture...etc.
Living in and experiencing other countries/cultures has made my life richer and expanded my world view. As an American, it helped me to understand why sometimes, other countries had a negative view of the USA at least on some issues.
There are good and bad people everywhere so I don't worry so much about that. I'm happy to be living outside the USA and for the most part I love the challenges that brings. It helps me to continue to grow as a person.
