Different online presence for different websites

Different avatars and usernames for different websites?

Last night I created 2 free SiteRubix websites to experiment with some niche ideas I have. As I was setting them up, I went to each Dashboard and tried to provide a username for each one, but the username cannot be changed.

I asked on LiveChat and some members informed me that I can provide my account with a nickname, and use it as an option for how I want my name to be displayed when I comment on my site or when I blog (instead of posting as "admin" which is the default choice).

Well, I still wanted a different icon to appear next to each nickname whenever I posted/commented on my sites. That's because the niches are unrelated and I wanted an icon that represents each one accordingly.

Manage multiple identities with one Gravatar account

After logging into my Gravatar account, which I thought provided you with a unique avatar, I discovered I can add new email addresses to it. And I can upload new images and associate whatever image I want with whichever email address. By providing a different email address on the dashboard of each website, I was able to have a different icon associated with my nickname.

What about you? If you have more than 1 websites created in WA, do you use the same Gravatar icon or multiple ones? Would that lead to problems and confusions in the future?

Thanks for reading!

I owned several websites at one time. I used different avatars and variations of my name.

Looking back, it was a mistake. As an affiliate marketer, it is better to brand YOU not the type of product. Use the same name and same avatar everywhere. It doesn't matter that you have different niches and interests.

You would only change to brand the product if you own the product. That would require a different marketing approach.

Instead of a changing icon, use an appropriate feature image with your posts and contents.

When you share in social media, state in the update posts along the lines of, "Today, I'm sharing one of my posts on my website about (topic). It doesn't matter that you shared a different website in a previous post. The relevant feature image will appear. But you as the author will remain constant. ~Jude

Thank you so much for commenting Jude, you have given me food for thought!

I felt more comfortable changing my username and associated Gravatar icon in each website, because I thought my niches are very different (one is solo travel and the other is astronomy/stargazing and I plan a third one about book reviews).

I have social media accounts for my travel website, but I dread creating new FB page and new Instagram account for the astronomy niche too! I won't have enough time to keep everything properly updated.

So I think I will do what you suggested - I will share posts in one account in Google plus, which I only created for my websites anyways, but I will specify the niche/website in the beginning of each post. I can do the same for LinkedIn too.

But in my travel website, I want to brand ME in the direction it's taking and not relate it with only promoting affiliate products. So I will keep the associated FB page only for that website.

You have thought it over and decided what works for you. That's great!

Hey Nicky, that is something new I have never seen before. Having a different nickname and/or avatar for your different sites. I found out when I created my avatar you had to use a different email address for any login entity. For example, my name is Ken so I have a gravatar pic and email address for that name. When I went to create another gravatar for Admin, which is the default entity of a Wordpress site, I had to provide a different email address. This was frustrating for me since I only have one email address. What's funny about this is gravatar requires a different email account for each entity but the pic can be the same.
Go Figure.
Ken

Hi Ken, I understand the frustration! There is really no reason to create a new email account for Gravatar if you're just going to use the same picture anyways :)

But yes, creating a new email address can be a hassle. I already had two, one hotmail and one gmail, so I just used those. I guess at least you can have the same pic but different username in each of your sites, if you want to differentiate a bit!

I'm just master of all my sites, so for authorship reasons I use my own name everywhere

I see no problem with different avatars for different websites Nicky. The Google search engines will simply mine each one effectively. It's a great way to amplify niche or other content on a per site basis!

Thanks, Michael!
Yes, I might be paying too much attention to details here (or finding more ways to procrastinate on the training? lol) but I believe different avatars for different niches is a nice touch!

HI Nicky, many thanks for this useful information! Am off to check it out, Sue :)

You're welcome, Sue!
