Every week I like to share what I'm working on and how it's helping me improve website traffic and business growth.
This week, I’ve been diving deeper into something closely related but often overlooked: AEO – Answer Engine Optimisation.
If you're unfamiliar with AEO, think of it as SEO’s newer, sharper cousin — designed to help your content appear as the answer in AI-generated responses, not just search engine results.
So, let’s unpack what AEO is and how you can start creating content that performs well in this evolving search environment.
What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?
AEO is about structuring your content so it can be easily read, understood, and repurposed by AI engines when users ask questions.
Instead of just optimising for search keywords, you’re now optimising to be the answer that platforms like ChatGPT and Google SGE pull from.
Most people have been taught a specific way to write. The problem is that AI needs content in a certain format so it can easily find the answers to respond to searches. So we have to change how we format the content to help AI understand what we've written and find the answer it is looking for.
The easier you make it for AI to find the answer, the more often it will quote your content in it's responses.
How to Create AEO-Friendly Content
1. Start with a Clear, Direct Answer
In this blog, I used a question as the H2 header - What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?
The question was answered immediately in the first the first line of content. No fluff, just a quick answer. The following paragraphs gave more of an explanation. This is AEO content.
It gives AI models a simple block to lift.
2. Use FAQ Sections

Why? Because AI LOVES clearly formatted Q&A content. Each answer becomes a snippet opportunity to get your content to the forefront of AI searches.
But you don't just want a FAQ section written into your blog. Use schema FAQ sections which are formatted specifically for AI to identify it as FAQ and draw on the information giving your content the best opportunity to be used.
3. Break Up Your Content with Subheadings
Structure matters. Use H2 and H3 tags to define key ideas and make content scannable — both for humans and machines.
Highlight key words to help AI scanner your content and identify what you article is about.
4. Add Schema Markup (even if it's just basic)
I use RankMath as my SEO plugin. They have a built-in Schema Generator to add FAQ, article, or how-to schema to each post. It increases the chances your content gets picked up by answer engines.
5. Link Authoritative Sources
AEO content isn't just about short answers — it needs to be trustworthy. So where possible start referencing sources more often (especially on financial and factual posts). Think of it as building your "trust score" with AI engines.
6. Refresh Your Content Regularly
AI platforms love fresh, up-to-date content. I now review and update one old post per week — and have seen a difference in traffic and re-indexing rates already.
