How Long Before I See Results?

Last Update: April 21, 2015

The #1 question on everyone's mind when they start a business venture is "how long until I actually make money?" This is a pretty impossible question to ask, as no one can predict the future. I can only share my personal results, and offer guidance on how you can replicate the process.

In my first 3 months I made $5 and spent about $100. Wow. Amazing, right? lol

In my first 6 months I made about $200 and spent about $300. Still not impressive considering how much I worked.

At my 1 year anniversary I had spent a total of $600* on my business and made $4000.

By 18 months in I had quit my job and was working full time from home

*Total expenses included my WA membership fee, paid at a monthly rate.

If I had stopped anywhere within that first year and said, "Enough! I'm not going to work for free. I want to see some results!" I would not be where I am today. I had plenty of failed websites along with a few successes, but the real thing that made a difference in whether or not I saw results was looking at my business in the long view.

At the time, I was living in China and needed a source of income that I could count on in case I had to leave in a hurry for whatever reason. If I didn't see results in 6 months, it didn't matter, because my goal was for 6 years.

How long before you see results? Who knows. It may be a month. It may be a year. It may be more than a year. A lot depends on how much time you commit on a daily basis. A year of work ahead of you sounds kind of scary, but are you here to turn over some quick cash or to build a business you can depend on for income?

I think one of the hardest things for newbies to do is to actually imagine what the future will be like. As someone new to WA and new to Wordpress website building, it can seem like you will always be confused and/or frustrated! The good news is that it gets easier with time (just like any skill - playing piano, installing tile, learning to swim)

One thing I did a few years back was to commit myself to seeing the future of my business by getting the yearly membership in Wealthy Affiliate. Instead of looking at the monthly withdraw from my Paypal account and wondering, "Do I really want this?", I could focus on what mattered...working for the results I wanted.

You can get discounted a yearly membership here!

Donate Just a $1 a Day To Help A Marketer In Need

I know that not everyone has the money to go yearly, but I think most people would want to lock in that discount if they could! So if you don't have the money right now, here's my suggestion: Donate just $1 a day to YOURSELF and save up!

A yearly membership is $359, which is just a $1 a day for one year. Get a box or a cookie jar or whatever, and physically put $1 in there every day. I think most people will have an extra dollar somewhere! Even if it's just spare change, you might be able to save a hundred bucks or so over the course of a year.

How long before you see results? It's hard to say. But I know that people who stick around long enough start to see the results of their hard work manifest in rankings, traffic, and sales.

What are your expectations for yourself? How long do you think you will have to work on your business before you see results?

the part where it mentioned "failed websites" kind of scares me. I thought every niche can be profitable? how likely will I post blogs everyday for 6 months and then only to find out its going to turn into a "failed website"?
Reply
ChrisGooden Premium
It has nothing to do with the amount of time or effort you put in. If you tunnel in the wrong direction you won't arrive at your destination.

Look at the car industry. Some names are well known and profitable, Some are just distant memories. There is nothing wrong with the niche, it's the player.

Every niche is profitable but not every niche player does what is needed to be profitable.

whats the best way to know if you're going into the right direction? I just want to make the best use of my time. Im not expecting success overnight, but I dont want to find out Ive been doing it wrong a year down the road.

That's a very good question, and one that every single one of us would love to know the answer to.

If the answer was simple then everyone in the world would be a millionaire, and no business would ever go bust. But life isn't like that, however much we want it to be.

Lots of people take up sport. Not every one of them wins Olympic Gold. Lots of people get married. Few expect it to end in divorce.

What's the solution to those issues? You just do your best, learn from those around you, keep making adjustments as you go.

Thanks Nathaniell, yours is the first answer that doesn't skirt the question of realistic expectations. I appreciate that. I think sometimes when answers are vague and talk about motivation and work, it leaves people expecting too much and they get disappointed. I liked that you gave hard answers to what worked for you. It helps me set realistic goals.and not get discouraged if I don' t see anything for the first six months.

This helps so much! I am concentration on good content and pleasing customers now. I want them happy and the money will follow when it follows. I want to learn as much as I can because I have never been computer literate. I love Kyle and Carson. They give us so many resources and we can go back and watch the classes again which I do.
I appreciate you advice. Kyle said he didn't quit and look at him now. Thank you Nathaniell. I will be back to read this again.

Inspiring thank you ! With being in school, and being a mom, I can't spend so much time, so I am giving myself 2 years to make a living off of this :-). That's cool with me. 2 years fly by! 2013 didn't seem that long ago. Either I can work retail by 2017, OR, I can be sitting at my office desk in my house with my coffee in my pyjamas listening to pink Floyd or something :-)

I too focus on the when factor of seeing some results, when in actuality, I'm already seeing results because my sites are getting steady visitors, albeit not a large amount of traffic. I will set my goal for 5 years and see where that takes me.

Yes, never give up.
My site is less than a month old and I just got my first affiliate links up on the site.
Will see how it goes when I add more and more content and links.
If I get first results in a few months, that would be awesome.
The thing is that this is something that will take time but then we have build up the start of a business that can get bigger and bigger over time.

Good post Nathaniel. One of the reasons I went yearly myself was to take away the temptation to quit. Although I am living in the Caribbean without a job I still had a couple of good credit cards.

I fully intend to pay back my credit card when I start making money. But Wealthy Affiliate was the most important thing that happened to me in a long time. And I was not going to let something like the fear of bad credit leaving me stuck looking for ways to make the monthly payment.

I originally thought I'd see results sooner because I have before, but I'm also gonna stick it out. I know it will be worth it to continue. The reward I see long-term is more appealing than doing something that's money now. Each month, I learn more and see some sort of improvement. I know I'll get there :) Aside from that, I've put too much into it to ever give up on it.
Your save a dollar a day idea is good, by the way!

Great article, as always, Nathaniel. In a way, asking how long it will take to see results is the wrong question to ask. The right question is "What will I do to GET results?" Or better yet, "What will I do EVERY DAY to get results?". That question places the focus on doing the work, which is only way to gt the results.

I also like your $1 a day plan. Not sexy, but it's doing what you can, and doing something EVERY DAY that moves you towards your goal. I do that savings program myself, for discipline. It's a permanent entry on my daily routine. I log the new entry every day. I make it a big deal (because it is!). It's become a game. I love to find ways to put in a little extra here and there, and watch my account grow. It started out less than a dollar a day, which at the time was a real struggle. But it was something positive that I could do every day

I now put a lot more than that in the jars (I have 3), and my account is pretty large, but the process started when I was broke. I was determined to succeed, no matter what.

The real value was the lesson. I don't go for sexy any more. I go for daily action, no matter how small. Your message, and your life example, is awesome!

Thanks,

Gordon

Well put Nathaniell.

It is very important that folks understand a business does not turn a profit overnight.

It is also important that folks understand they are creating a business at WA and not a short term device to get rich quick. (they never work anyway).

Most important is folks need to hear it and see it from others in the community - So Thanks Nathaniell!

ROCK ON!

I'm with you. Building a business along with a nonprofit is tiring and very consuming. However, I keep pressing through by learning when I get frustrated by coming to these videos or tutorials. Not stopping until I get it. Getting ideas from sites that speak to my niche. And being OK with messing up. My point is don't quit keep going until you find that sweet spot and then one day, we be at a point where we can teach others. Just keep swimming!!!!

Great post Nathaniell. I think the best part is "But I know that people who stick around long enough start to see the results of their hard work manifest in rankings, traffic, and sales".

What I can say is that real life and the theory are so different... Building a business online requires time, hard work and PATIENCE. Based on my own experience I now understand why so many people quit after a couple months.

A lot depends on having the right mindset. I decided to go yearly in 2013 right from the start because I knew that it would take time before I see the results and I believe I will quit my job by the end of this year or in the first mid of the next year.

I think if you treat internet marketing as your daily job, you will succeed and if you treat it as set and forget cash generating machine then you will quit your internet dream faster than you even imagine.

And the last thing I think it's extremely important to understand that even if you follow the training here at WA there is no guarantee that you will make money at all. It depends on many factors, such as how much time you commit, how good you are at writing content, how you apply the knowledge, etc... and some luck would be in place too...

Technically, it's not "deducted". It's pro-rated. So if you paid $47 this month and upgrade mid-month, what you paid that month is credited towards the yearly payment. But previous months payments do not count towards the yearly membership price.
