Slowly Building A Following - More To Learn
Hey WA! I have somewhat successfully ventured into the world of social media. (Here is my first post about the successes) So as I move forward, I want to update everyone on my social media status...
I Am Getting There
How am I doing? Well, I am a few months in and slowly building a following:
- Facebook - 48 followers on my page. Mostly friends and family, but there are some others. I did "boost" a post and it added 1 follower. Not sure I am where I want to try again, but it was fun to see the stats.
- Pinterest - 9 followers...but all organic. I get some pretty good page views, but still not where I would like.
- Twitter - 52 followers... all organic. It was an awesome feeling to pass the 50 follower mark, but not much traffic generated
- Instagram - 29 followers... again, all organic. Weird side note: my niece has decided to "learn" how to promote a business so she is one of the followers. It seems weird to promote beer with a 12-year old follower, but her mom was cool with it so I will continue
- YouTube - 5 subscribers (and 65 views of my 3 videos). I must admit this is a tough one. My niche should be great for YouTube, but I hate making videos
So there it is. I have picked up some followers, but I did notice something funny. I tend to do my website work late at night. This includes much of my social media...
That means I have a lot of followers from other countries. It is all one big intertwined web of people so I am getting more people in the US to follow me... I just thought it was interesting.
But I Still Need Help
This is where the awesome community here really helps out. For everything I have needed help on there is usually people out there with an answer.
I currently will schedule some posts throughout the day so that I can get more access to people in my timezone (I will settle for my side of the world). Personally, I think social media has the potential to drive my business, but I don't think I am using it to it's maximum potential.
Here is my call to action...please answer some (or all) of the questions in the comments so that everyone can learn.
- What constitutes a good post (if you are a follower, what makes you respond?)
- How do you effectively use hashtags?
- What have been your most successful posts?
- Which social media has been the best at driving traffic?
- Does boosting or promoting actually help?
- What other social media hacks would you pass on to someone new to social media?
Cheers!
Nate

Hi Nate,
Your figures look very similar to mine in regard the first three. Not managed to grasp Instagram or Youtube just yet. I tend to post, then add it to Pinterest and then tweet the pinterest post. Then I'll add it to whichever Facebook page is relevant. I'm playing the 'very long game' which suits my goals just fine. I'm also on LinkedIn. Ideally I would like to allocate a day for each, well part of a day. Drip feeding all of them on a consistent basis seems to work best for me. I won't be on the podium but I'll get a 'Thanks for participating' certificate.
Thanks Twack
I never thought to tweet a pinterest post. That is a new idea I will have to try.
I love the participation certificate...at least I have something to earn quickly.
Cheers!
Nate, I'll try to answer some of your questions.
1. A good post has a visual impact is not too long and engages my interest. Too much text puts me off.
2. I don't really understand hashtags.
3. Something that engages the reader emotionally.
4. I think Facebook has driven the most traffic to my site. I have more than 1 Facebook page.
5. I have not had much luck with paid ads. However, I live in a country whose language is not English and I post in English. Maybe I need to target an English speaking country. That reminds me to have another try at this soon.
6. Essentially you always need new traffic so I would add as many social media sites as possible. Don't put all your eggs in one basket!.
Thanks for this Alister. It seems I need to work on more emotional engagement... I haven't tried that, but it sounds like a great next step.
Cheers!
This is great you give your self a chance to take a hold of all of the information that was just drop into your lad and you put it into good used!.....

Nate, sounds good and I have one question for you. Are you posting on your regular FB page or on a FB business page?

Sonny
I have a FB business page. It seemed like a better idea than having a following where I post pictures of my family.
Cheers!
Nate
There are many marketing FB groups that allow you to post in them also. I am signed up on them with one of my FB accounts.
Also when I post daily on my own timeline, I always post Public, this is daily increasing the exposure to my site.
Thanks! I like the plan
