Learning from a Trip with My Grandson

Last Sunday I got to get my grandson Keegan for a day. I knew this was a day that I wanted to change the way we were spending time. The last time we went out, I was not taking Keegan's feelings into much thought....I mean the little things like driving from his house. I was just driving.

This time I was being silly and saying "Hey Keegan!" He would just smile at me. His little rosy cheeks and his little teeth just smiled.

There were times that he was not happy, and I should be thankful there is usually something he wants. His pacifier. I was never a mother whose children liked pacifiers so I was not wanting him to use his. After all he was almost 2 next September.

But I began to understand that Keegan was Keegan and what meant something to him was going to be different. So I let him have his pacifier and he was immediately happy.

Keegan is a different generation than my sons. One is 16 and one is 27. He has different wants and different desires. We had a good day. I was a happy grandma!

That is so nice to hear, Susan! Savor those times as they are fleeting and are gone before you know it!

Yes, one day when Keegan was much younger I was keeping him. The only thing on my mind was my children were not like this. Pretty soon I found myself looming at my watch. How much linger? Then it hit me hard.. I had been wanting the past. And by allo w ing myself to get caught in that thinking I had almost wasted the day. I think that day had about an hour left with Keegan. I started making it count.

It sounds like you had your "A-Ha" moment, and I'm glad that they are counting for you now, Susan!

absolutely! It was the lightbulb that went off. Thankful for that.

I think most of us are when those moments in our lives happen, Susan!

Jeff

Glad you had fun.

It was wonderful!

Hey Susan
That's a beautiful story.
Wishing you well and a terrific day.

I am amazed that so much can be learned at the age of 52.

It was a day that helped me move forward with much needed change. This week I am seeing positive outcomes with my special ed students. Just a little change here and there. Better results.
