I'm Not Creative.

I hear from people more often than you can imagine "I am not creative". But, are you really? Do you actually know what creativity is? Most people will say "Yes. It is being able to draw." They are incorrect.

Everyone is creative, even destructive people are creative. Creativity is the ability to create an idea. This is something every person does every day. They choose to use it for positive ideas or negative ones. Think about what you did today. Did you have an idea? There is only one way that it got into your mind, you created it. What we do with those ideas is a different thing. Being able to create an idea in your mind is a natural ability that all humans have. If you did not have this ability, it would make your life very difficult. It would be nearly impossible to learn if the only things that came into your mind were commands from a computer or other people. If you never had thoughts and ideas, what would you be?

People link art with creativity. Art is in our every day lives. Art is a skill, it is not the same as creativity. Skills are things you have to learn and practice to get better at them. Some people need more practice than others. Creativity and art do go together, but they are not the same thing. Look at the world around you and imagine if there was no art in the world and no creativity. What if the ideas never came to anyone's mind? Say goodbye to your houses, clothes, cars, recipes, and everything else that you love. Someone had to come up with these ideas and someone with the skills to make them had to bring those ideas to life. These things took teamwork from many different people. Many of those people at some point in their lives said "I'm not creative...." Are we really sure about this? The next time you think about art as a hobby or hear that art is not essential, think about this. Then think about, what is art, really?

Art is a skill to bring an idea to life. Whether it is drawing, writing, singing, music, building, cooking, baking, or even problem solving. Yes, I said problem solving. How is that art? Your creative mind has the ability to look at a problem and see multiple solutions to that problem and create new ones. Yes logic also plays a role, but we are not talking about logic today. A problem solving artist has the ability to bring those solutions to life and make them work to solve a problem. This takes skill and creativity, which took practice and the ability to learn and the ability to have new ideas. Literally, anything you do that uses a skill and creativity can be considered an art.

It blows your mind, right? And you thought it was about making pretty things. ha! Next time you see an artisan such as a bread maker or a soap maker, take a close look at the art they created. It doesn't hang in a gallery and make thousands of dollars. Instead, it is out in the world and gives people what they need to be happy in their life. It is the little things all around you that is art, the skills people have to provide things that never would have existed without their ideas and skills, the life you see every day IS ART.

Will you ever call yourself a person who is not creative again after reading this? I wonder. Or will you see creativity and art for what it really is? What it really is, is truly amazing and it is everywhere.
