Complaining about AI? It Killed the How-To Blogger
Guys (and Gals), the AI hit pieces this weekend prompted this piece. Aside from killing the vibe in useless comments, it also killed the "How-To" Blogger. I have been around long enough to witness this full circle.
For years, we were told to blog by teaching our "How-Tos"
- "Five steps to do this."
- "Ten tips for that."
It workedâuntil it didnât.
Then AI walked in, flipped the script, and gave everyone access to everything.
Overnight, âHow toâ became less valuable. Why?
Because now anyone can ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot to provide an instant answer with no scrolling, no popups, no fluff.
But something unexpected happened in the wreckage.
The Pendulum Swung Back
People didnât stop reading blogs. They just stopped reading generic blogs.
What they want to read today is different from what they wanted yesterday.
I read an interesting piece on Email Capturing. The post was timely, I was dumping The Chimp, due to its lack of "automation support". Anyone with an email list knows how important that first email is. A person grabs your lead magnet, and your system sends a polite thank you message. Well, The Chimp has dropped all automations on its free plan. <- Word to the wise, if you have a free Chimp account, you need to move it.
When I started blogging, this would have been an acceptable post. But not today.
Today, people are looking for honesty. Friction... Curiosity... A Voice.
They want to hear your process, not just your product.
What was missing in that post was the actual what did you do to set up your email list?
That is what I wanted to read. I did not want to read a generic piece telling me about the importance of capturing emails, with a recommendation to use the Chimp.
"Is Blogging Dead?"
No, blogging hasn't died in the age of AI.
It simply evolved from being a teacher to becoming a thinking partner.
And the ones who embrace this shift?
Theyâre about to dominate this next wave.
New School = Old School
When blogging first started, it was little more than a daily journal of what you were doing and what worked and what didn't.
The people would join your site and comment,
"Oh yeah, that didn't work for me either, but this did... Or WOW! I never thought of that, what a great idea!"
Google Changed Everything
SEO, keyword targeting, link structures, content pyramids, and pillars became the rage. We started writing for robots instead of readers. Suddenly, the âHow-Toâ format took over. And for a time, it worked. Rankings brought traffic. Traffic brought income. Some of my best posts were obscure "How-Tos". "How to Keep COBOL Running in 2000 was quite popular.
But those days have faded fast, if not gone altogether.
The March 2024 Google's Helpful Content Update was a wake-up call. My Google impressions fell off a cliff. Thousands of clicks a weekâgone. I wasnât alone.
The Culprit? AI
AI didnât just kill my traffic. It exposed a bigger truth.
People donât need you to teach them anymore. They need you to guide them.
Now, weâre back to where blogging began. But this time with better tools and higher expectations. You canât just share what you know. You have to share how you got there.
Thatâs your real value now.
The Death of âHow-Toâ Content
AI doesnât get tired. It doesnât gatekeep. It knows everything. It can pass the Bae Exam, has several Medical Degrees, and a Doctorate in International Business. It doesnât forget Step 3 in a rush to get home, and never complains about my weird hours and overtime.
That means:
- âHow to start a blogâ = outdated
- âHow I started my blog and what Iâd do differently nowâ = relevant
What is the difference? Your perspective has been added.
In the AI era, your personal process is more valuable than perfect instructions.
Your failures, adjustments, and lived examples are what people seek. Not for the outcome, but for the context. AI can't fake that. At least not yet!
The Return of âShow, Donât Tellâ
One of my followers was struggling in their niche and mentioned that they were going to drop it in favor of going back to Etsy. You Do You Niche Selection is alive and well! Your niche isnât what you teach. Itâs what you do.
Blogging is becoming where open journaling meets behind-the-scenes meets personal innovation.
Aside from being a blogger. Youâre:
- A testing lab
- A pattern finder
- A guide with mud still on your boots
People follow that.
They relate to that.
And most importantly, they buy from that.
Why âTeachingâ is the Wrong Frame of Mind
Letâs be honest, most of us arenât trying to be online professors. We got into niche blogging and affiliate marketing to make money, and when we started, "teaching" How-Tos was the way to do it. But that is not who we are.
Weâre learners. Tinkerers. Explorers.
AI has flipped the teacher/student model upside down.
Now:
- The facts are coming from the bots
- The meaning comes from you
The New Authority is Process Transparency
Authority used to mean having answers.
Now it means documenting your process with clarity and intent.
Instead of:
"Hereâs how to use Notion."
Try:
"Hereâs how Iâm using Notion to fix my broken weekly workflow and what tripped me up at first."
Thatâs what pulls people in.
In a sea of sameness, thatâs what makes your content unforgettable.
Old School is New Again
The sooner we drop the old content habits, the sooner weâll find our voice again.
You donât need to outdo AI.
You need to out-relate it.
So hereâs a simple rule for your next post:
If AI can say it better, donât write it.
If AI canât say it your way, write it loud and clear.
Let your next blog post be a snapshot of your real work.
- What youâre testing
- What youâre building
- What youâre trying to figure out
Thatâs what resonates with today's readers.
Because in 2025, they are not asking âHow do I do this?â
Theyâre asking:
âWhoâs already on the path and can I trust their take?â
When you walk that road, share the view.
And if you want help choosing the path that matches your story, skillset, and goals, I've built a system for that. Itâs called The Amazing Niche Master, and it exists for exactly this moment in time.
Because AI isnât your competitor.
Itâs your collaborator.
But the direction... the story... the voice?
That still belongs to you.
So donât write to teach. Write to reflect.
What did you try this week?
What broke?
What surprised you?
What shortcut saved you an hour?
Those posts have lasting power because theyâre personal and practical.

I really love the way youâve put this out there. Honestly, I think this new direction for blogging feels like a breath of fresh air. These days, sharing the behind-the-scenes, the ups and downs, or even the little surprises along the way is what actually builds trust. I know for me, some of my most memorable connections with readers happened when I shared what didnât go as planned, not just what worked.
AI can give people quick answers, sure, but it canât share those real-life moments or the way we problem-solve as we go. Thatâs where our value is now, showing up with our real experiences, quirks, and even the messy parts. I think readers are craving more of that honesty, and itâs actually a relief to let go of trying to be perfect all the time.
Thanks for saying what a lot of us have been thinking. This shift is definitely challenging, but itâs also what keeps things interesting and real. Hereâs to more stories, more experiments, and more learning together.
Sonia
Having been a blogger for others and now myself, I have been around the Web for nearly 30 years. I remember blogging being just that, a journal of what you were trying to accomplish. In the early days, many people were trying to figure out what to do with the internet. So they created journals to help others navigate the World Wide Web.
Today, people are just now waking up to AI. As bloggers, we have had the luxury of getting in on the ground floor. What we are doing today is paving the way for people to enter the World of AI. Our path, our journey, is their guide.
We do need to use that lens to focus on what we are doing. How-to guides today are not about the tools, but about how we decided to use them, and why.
People are looking for that, and not "You Need to Capture Emails". AI will tell you to do that. But how did you get your system set up?
We are on The Path Together.
Enjoy the day.

Thanks, MrDon! Love connecting with someone whoâs seen all the changes over the years. Itâs kind of wild to think how much things keep shiftingâand how weâre all still learning and figuring things out as we go.
Honestly, some days I feel like Iâm back in the early days, just experimenting and hoping something sticks. But thatâs also what keeps it interesting, right? Always something new around the corner.
Hope you have a great day too! Curious to see what youâre working on next.
Sonia
"I feel like Iâm back in the early days, just experimenting and hoping something sticks. "
This is exactly what early blogging was. But instead of hoping something sticks, talk about your experiments, what worked, and what didn't. What did you learn from the trials and tribulations? What are you working on? I may need to work on the same thing. That was the original Internet.
Hi Don
Excellent post outlining an area I'd been wondering about myself.
Much food for thought. Appreciated.
;-)

Hi Don!
Thanks for sharing this brilliant post!
indeed, AI is doing all the teaching so we do not need to do that anymore now. Instead we have to write to reflect things that we have done and give our honor opinions , experiences and insights that we have gained from doing, using, figuring out, testing, and trying.
Our personal reflections can provide practical lessons that others can apply and use in their lives and this is what will give us the unique edge to stand out from the crowd. I appreciate the share.
Have a great week ahead! Wishing you the very best!
Kind regards,
Nichola

This is indeed 'food for thought' here Donald and I agree with your perspective on this. When I analyse my own search processes I find that I too, am not going to Google anymore, but to ChatGTP. It's a very interesting shift in behaviour from the users and one we do need to address.
Very powerful advice if people are canny enough to take it on board and use it. Thanks
Gail
You can lead a horse to water... A lot of bloggers tend to get set in a routine that is so entrenched it becomes a ditch.
Thanks for the comment.
Don
Yes, I've been in that ditch a lot I think!!
