A content farm or content mill engages large numbers of freelancer writers to basically write and journal breaking ideas. The objective here involves generating content for search engine retrieval.

This has been criticized at times due to authors carelessness in sourcing information. One must be skillful to give attribution through general statements or direct citing of authority!

The ultimate purpose is commercial in nature. Attracting reader page views Page views are the ultimate advertising indicator on the web and the more reader clicks and observations the better.

This is great info. Hilarious cartoon! Thanks fir sharing this

My eldest daughter asked about earning money by writing online a while back. I said sure, that seems like a nice way to earn money. She is a prolific writer. But I agreed only on the condition she let me screen all her writers’ listings.

...What a load of misrepresentative rubbish most of those opportunities turned out to be! They were mostly content mills, earning a mint from product listings and linkback shenanigans. The original content they were seeking was simply to bypass spam filters.

She has since settled on other online work opportunities to manage alongside her studies, but that early search started a good conversation we still have today.

We talk a lot about focusing on quality, purpose, mission, and long-term reputation building. We speak about not feeling so compelled to churn out content, so that the threshold for ‘should I publish this?’ is lowered more than it should be.

We are trying to avoid contributing to the ‘landfill’ of ideas, in short. And to make sure always, that whatever we contribute, is helping to make the world a little bit better.

I have also drawn to her attention the many unethical and even political conundrums content mills have been implicated in. Theft of IP (outright plagiarism or ‘content spinning’) and information warfare is just the tip of the iceberg. As @mickeyb123 says below - be careful who you engage with.

This means we are perhaps more picky in this household about where we loan our time and effort than some people are. I have advised her against content mills. But I promise her, in the long run, that always making the better quality (and sometimes) harder or less popular choices, will be worth it.

Good idea. Thanks!

Great idea! Thanks for sharing it!

Anita

As many of you know, I have spent most of my time on the internet writing this material for a great many others.

It is a great way to get content if you are not able to do it yourself, however, be wary about who you get to create content for YOUR website!

Good points, Mike. But, you destroyed my idea of a "How to Drink Milk from the Carton" info product. :-)

I fell into the trap of wanting to have a hundred posts on my site in a short period of time. There is so much to learn. There is a great advantage for me to go back over my material having not seen it for a few days and seeing it with a fresh set of eyes.

Thanks for sharing, Mike.

I never knew about this...Great article!

You're most welcome!

A very interesting article, I had no idea that such content farms or mills were a field of endeavour!
