Picking a Niche

It seems to me as tough the hardest part about getting started is picking a niche. I have a strong idea of what drives me and my passion and how I can help others. But my only issue is zooming in on a particular area of interest that I know I can focus on and that is profitable.
There's an area that I feel strongly about and can ramble on about forever. I can motivate others through words of encouragement and by expressing thoughts that I know others share with me. I know that it's something that I can definitely do well in but my only issue is having faith that I will be able to deliver what it is that I know they need to hear. I want to be able to offer what I can to them to hopefully encourage them to do the same as me. I guess the word is "being persuasive". It's something that I know I'm good at with my particular topic.
Another thing I know is that there are others who produce niche sites that are somewhat related to my point of interest and offer different things that compliment what I'm interested in. But I noticed that they don't quite relate exactly to what I'm doing. They only touch the basic idea of what I am offering and I would have more of an advantage by targeting those who have the same passion for my topic.
That would be the hardest part for me when it comes to building my business online. However, after much research and changes, I have finally picked a niche that I know represents me fully and is going to be a great area for me to focus on. Picking a niche shouldn't be something that's so hard to do that it prevents you from being able to get started. My problem was that I made a mountain out of a mole hill and that was keeping me from accomplishing some initial goals.
I regret to say that it took me a very long time to see that and a very long time to get started building a successful site because of that. I cannot say that I have the most intriguing site but I have a better start than when I started trying to do so in the past. I am getting so much further and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel good about what I'm doing and feel that I will make it now. I have taken my passion and turned it into a business. On that note, as long as I continue to pour out my heart to my site, I'll never have to work for a living. :-)

Choosing a niche can be frustrating the first time. I think I tried 3 or 4 before I settled on one that worked for me.
Keep at it and like you said, put yourself into your site. It will connect with your readers. That is after all what we are all working toward. Making a connection with people.

:) This is quite similar to what I wrote about in my blog post today. Apparently we also share similar interests. Motivating, inspiring and encouraging will be at the core of my blog. However, I got the niche thing wrong at first because I ignored my real passion but I've realized my mistake and I'm back at the drawing board. All the best with your site, you will do well! "...as long as I continue to pour my heart into my site, I'll never have to work again!" Love it! :)

Thank you. We do share similar interests. You'll make it now that you've figured out what your passion is. Good luck.

Hi MizzScott, I really like your article mostly because you talk about a very critical subject that concerns to most of us who are barely starting out building a business online. I'm basically interested in "self-improvement/self-growth niche," motivation, inspiration that sort of topics. That's probably why your article caught my attention. And you're right, it takes such a long time to come up with the proper and well defined niche, even if you have a very strong passion about a particular subject.

There's nothing more satisfying in the world than to be able to turn a passion of a whole life into a business which will be your "modus vivendus." I'm going to quote the last phrase of your article-if you'll allow me- "as long as I continue to pour out my heart to my site, I'll never have to work again!" Now MizzScott, I want to add an extra punching line to your words; " even if I die in the process!" Keep on pressing on!

I agree. But I love the punch line. Thank you!

I have been there. I hope all the newbies read the because this is a very common plague.
Best of luck to you.
Kymee

Thank you

I kept bouncing around with niches, and adding more to the list, even though I knew what I wanted to do from the start, so I'm ready to begin, with my first idea, hopefully it pans out. Some are great ideas, and things I'm interested in, but I don't know a whole lot about what to write in those areas, so I can see how this whole niche thing can be confusing. Anyway, I just went over everything, so am FINALLY ready to build a website, I just hate to pick a niche, and then wishing I'd gone with something else. They say don't overthink all this stuff, but I do anyway, can't help myself. If you have a real passion for something, you should go for that, then you won't be second guessing yourself later, plus if you have to do some research, it will be an area that interests you. Good luck with it all, here's hoping we're both a success.

Yeah I feel you on that. It's hard to resist bouncing around until you find something you feel good about. Initially for the niche I chose, I knew what all I could write about because I had a passion for it. However, even though that was a lot of information, I knew it wouldn't be enough to fill an entire site. So wrote up as much as I could on my site as posts and pages. Then I took my idea to the library and got some books (after discovering that I could have rented e books on my iPad). I'm now reading those books for ideas and adding to my site. I just kinda figured good ole research from paperbacks would keep my content from being duplicated from the other stuff on the Internet. Feels so good to finally have a plan of action. But you've got a start now that you've chosen a niche and you can get rolling. We will make it. Good Luck!
