Choose your first niche

I believe choosing the right niche is the most important task for a new affiliate marketer. Most people will tell you to choose something that you are interested in. That's not a bad advise. Some would say choose something which are popular, more people would be interested in. Before our discussion on how to choose your niche, let's talk about what would happen if you choose a wrong niche. Then you would realize how important it is on picking a right niche. I would suggest you spend a few days to think over it before you start building your first website.

If you pick the wrong niche. You will waste a lot of your time, effort and money; and then find out that it doesn't work out for you. It has happened to me before and I learned the lesson. For the following reasons: -

1. you run out of ideas to post new contents.

2. you are not really interested in the subject as you first thought.

3. the niche you choose is not something which will make you any money.

4. you have too many competitor online and they are much better than you.

5. you cannot help your visitor in any meaningful way, either give him good info or something valuable to take away. (Like an entertainer who can't entertain others, a doctor who can't heal a patient or a mother who can't look after her kids.)

To have a website that will be successful, you need to have high quality unique content. You need to introduce new ideas to the subject or new way to present the subject. Otherwise, you are no different from everybody and why would someone like to look at your posts. You need to stand out from the crowd. There are no luck involved. If you are not good then you will not be successful. All this has to been planned out before you even start building your website.

It might sound scary for you, but it will save you a lot of headache in your path to be a successful affiliate.

I am not trying to teach anyone here, but just to give you ideas on what you need to think about when picking your niche.

A question for anyone who are reading this post.

What is unique about your website and how you stand out from the crowd?

I wish everybody a good weekend!

Cheers,

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for that message. I am someone who has started and stopped as well.... unsure of which direction or niche to choose. I think you're right. I have pondered niches for such a long time. 5 years in fact (although I wasn't here on Wealthy Affiliate when I started this process).
The interesting thing is that my passion is something that my family and friends think I'm not good at. Even when I was a teenager my mother couldn't understand it...
I keep on coming back to the same idea over and over... maybe I will have a unique slant, and not the usual approach?
Either way... you give me more confidence in the idea that the niche that stays alive in my heart is what I need to keep on following.
Nevertheless... every mistake or detour is a learning experience and as we persist we will get better and better.

When the same idea comes back to you again and again. You have to do something about it. It means that you are genuinely interest in it. If you don't take any action, it will haunt you for the rest of your life.
You may be successful or may be not, but you have to do something.

Yes, thank you - exactly what I'm thinking. And really it is what I'm taking action on now, because I don't want to die thinking I didn't give it my best shot!

Thank you for that insight. Just a thought to follow that. You can look at that first site as your "learning site". Most people are new at this and their first site is like their test run if you will. They learn all the ropes on it. Think of it this way, you don't normally buy a brand new car to learn on. There is never time wasted when you learn a lesson from it ... like what didn't work. Remember how many failures Thomas Edison had with the light bulb?

I'd say you were DARN lucky to get it right the first time. :-)

You are absolutely right, a very nice comment.

Thank you, Sir.

Thanks for sharing a good blog, agree with you, if we don't find how to stand out from the crowd, our website will stay small with poor traffic :(

You need to find out what can you do to make a difference to stand out from others. Maybe personal touch, different way to present your content.

Yes, it’s wise to choose a niche that is your passion. If the niche is something you love, then that will come across in your writing, subsequently your content will be more engaging.

Thanks for sharing!

Ray

You are 100% correct.
