What's on Top of the Summit

Potato Chip Rock is one of the hardest hike I have ever done so far. This is the place where non-hikers want to go on to get a photo. It is located in the town of Poway, outside of San Diego and it took us a no joke 8-miles hike. It is a thin rock shaped like a potato chip that people climb on. When you are on it, you can't hardly move to the end because it feels like it will break at any moment.

How to get there

We left early morning before the sun comes out so we could return early. I always have my hiking sticks with me, a bag pack with bottles of water, munchies and my favorite hat. It is 10 to 17 minutes off the freeway and it costs $10 entrance fee on the weekends and holidays if you do not reside in the City of Poway. At the entrance, they ask you which recreation do you want. You can also go fresh fishing at the lake, Running or Jogging, Biking....... Once you park on the parking lot, near there is a sporting goods/food store and bathroom where the trail starts.

The Trail

We walked the paths around the lake for a mile before reaching the real route. As we headed for 3 miles to the summit, the sun started to come out, I begun to sweat and with momentous elevation, I felt my bag pack has gotten heavier. My legs started to incapacitate as we get straight the whole way. Now you can see the beautiful lake you have trailed by from your location.

The Summit

Heading towards the mountain there was a lot formation of rocks unlike anything else along the trail that would make your walk up amusing. The idea of it as exciting your interest for what is to occur: The extremely Potato Chip Rock. I noticed that there was no shade for a great place to relax it is a hot day! We went through about 4 liters of water on the trip and still ran out with about another half a mile walk to the potato chip rock once after we reach the top of the mountain. I was surely worn out by this time, but with constant pressure we are almost at the destination! Along the way you could see some nice boulder rocks imagining how these figures are made through nature.

The Potato Chip Rock

When you are about a quarter of a mile away from the summit, you will see The Potato Chip Rock from the distance. We are almost there! We continued walking until we reached the real highlight of the journey.

It is a unique rock that really looked like a potato chip. It requires some kind of technique to get to the top. It feel horrendous to stand on, but it doesn't make out that way until you get up on it. At that stage you can hear the reflection of your footsteps and that is a little bit eerie. Finally, we reached the place and there almost about a 100 people are waiting in line. We grasped our breath and rested until it was our turn. This was an exciting experience.

Hey very cool! I've done that hike a while ago and also live in Ramona (like 2 miles up the road from Mt Woodson). Would love to connect and network with other WA folks that are local!
