The Five Second Rule

Be honest, the first thing you thought of was how long you can wait to pick food up off the floor right? I know you did! I would have to!

Actually this post is about making decisions and action! Who would have thought?

The Five-second rule references a book and a rule discovered by a lady and author named Mel Robbins . Five-second rule is a simple tool that undercuts most of the psychological weapons your brain employs to keep you from taking action, which will allow you to procrastinate less, live happier and reach your goals, and I believe that it can be a real game changer that can help us all!

The actual use of the five-second rule helps us to make decisions that we might normally talk ourselves out of. For instance, I tried the first step this morning and it worked!

I set my alarm for 5:00am this morning and when it went off I saw the post it notes with the number 5 on it that I stuck to the clock. As soon as I saw that I started a backwards countdown. 5,4,3,2,1, and jumped up from the bed and went to the bathroom for a shower.

I am not a morning person at all!

I tale great pride in trying to be as nice to everyone and treat people with respect...but not at 5:00am! I am a grumpy, grouchy ogre and it's best to leave me alone for the first hour. Once I have that first hour and a half pot of coffee, I'm good !

But this morning I sprung out of bed and jumped into a cold shower and my coffee was ready when I was done! I actually had time to work on some content before I had to leave and I felt great! But that great feeling was replaced by what I refer to as walking dead syndrome by lunchtime, because I didn't go to bed till 2:00am that morning! Need a little more sleep than that !

Anyway the short explanation of the five-second rule is to make your decision and do it,or start doing it before your brain tells you otherwise.

Your brain will catch up and start describing fear, hesitation, and it will end in wasted time and /or procrastination. And that tends to happen after about five seconds!

My results on a few things I've used the five-second rule on thus far

Other than actually getting out of bed before the sun was up, I used this practice several times today and it works ! It sounds crazy or gimmicky, but it is a fact that if you beat your brain to the punch, you get tons more done !

I was planning to wait until I had more examples to share with you, because you know how I really enjoy making a long story even longer! (Insert roll eyes here)

But I thought I would share it tonight because Fridays are my travel days and I may not get a chance to share it tomorrow. This way, if you folks want to check it out you will have the weekend to do so.

I have an Audible account and it lets me share a book (no affiliate links ) LOL

If you would like for me to send you this audio book for free just PM me your Email and I'll get it to you tomorrow evening! If there are a lot of requests it might take a couple of days.

You guys need to check this book out, because I fight procrastination every day on a major level and I think this audio book is going to help me a lot! And it may help you too!

Have a great day! And the best of success to you!

Mike

that is fantastic! and yes I did think about food... but my kids are off on timing (their 5 seconds is really more like 10... hate wasting food LOL) - but that is a great tool to use and I think I will be putting that into practice on more things than my kids' food. haha

Another great post Mike, will let you know how I go with the 5 sec rule..

Fantastic! ... five-second rule--uhm--very interesting... so kick oneself in gear within those five seconds before the brain gets a chance to change one's mind and lead to 'procrastination' or whatever else other than getting to it! ... must try this... thanks kindly for sharing... all the best, cheerio... :)

Great post! I'm not a morning person either and it tends to be because I go to be too late as well.

Hi thank you for sharing, I myself am not a morning person. but that is because I go to bed when everyone else is getting up.
