You should check your site regulary for broken links.
Put your site through this program and it will show you if you have 404's and other stuff.
It might take a wee while depending on how big your site is but well worth the trouble -

Take out the www in the box before you insert your site URL.

Which plugin are you using to create your sitemap? If you have more than one plugin doing the same thing then they trip over each other's feet.
Your sitemap should be at yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml or yourwebsite.com/sitemap_index.xml
I am using the Google sitemaps XML plugin that Kyle showed us to add in the training. Everything was going great until I tried to add it to the webmaster tool and I keep getting a 404 general error.
Do you also have All In One SEO or Yoast SEO? Deactivate Google Sitemaps XML and see if the problem persists.
