I'm having trouble grasping what it means to "get links" or having people "link to me," etc. Does that mean having other people put my link on their website? Am I supposed to be d

Back links from other websites can improve your Google rankings if those links are from respected "authority" sites. There's not much you can do about getting them except wait for relevant traffic to recognize the worth of your site. Contriving to get back links in the manner advocated by wise guys who think they can game the system will only hurt you in the long run. Just keep getting good content on your site and the back links will happen.

Kyle seems to be saying in the training that the whole backlinks thing is wrong, not helpful, and that he rarely allows any links to 'dilute' his site

thing about it -you are sending your traffic away from you site and they may not be ready to buy yet when they read your content, so you set them up to purchase elsewhere

While browsing the internet, I have seen some blogs that have a list of links to other blogs about the same subject.

I use links to other websites on my own site often. I write about crochet, and linking makes it easy to use other people's works to add to my own. For example, youtube videos that give instructions.

I wouldn't worry about getting links too much. If you work on your site and concentrate on good content, keep adding to that content, the links will naturally follow.

Hi Mike. There are absolutely loads of ways to get links (backlinks) to your site.
For example I have Pinterest boards and over 3,000 followers and they all link back to my boards. They also 'Pin' my stuff to their boards and I have one board that allows then to pin and I also have my stuff in it so that when they pin that board to their own Pinterest account I get the exposure.
Its the same kinda thing with FB or Twitter. You follow the boards/groups. Its a kinda snowball rolloing down a hill effect. It justs gets bigger and bigger.
You could also think about joining Forums that are relevant to your Niche.
Also Google+, LinkedIn, Stumbleupon and Tumblr etc etc.
Hope this helps.
Have anice day.
Robert
