Making A Website For Free - Step by Step

Since I’ve been here at WA I’ve created 3 sites - 2 niche sites and 1 MMO site. I’ve kind of got bogged down with all the steps required to set these up, going back through the training and following the steps making sure I hadn’t missed anything out.

It was when I was trying to design my MMO site that I came across a You Tube video that was about how to make a website in Wordpress - and it showed you each step with no steps skipped.

I thought it might have something that I could learn from, seeing I was a Wordpress novice. Sometimes the videos on You Tube say they’re about a particular topic, but then you find it’s not what you’re looking for. However, this was SO useful!

The Thing With Wordpress

Wordpress is used to build around 30% of the world’s websites and is a powerful tool. However, it’s quite daunting to start your site from scratch and without any coding know-how.

I wanted my website to look individual and have more functionality than a lot of the free themes seemed to give. For example I wanted a slider on the homepage and these only seemed to be available on the paid themes.

There was a theme I had my eye on for my first niche site, so I purchased it and couldn’t wait to change all of the settings to how I wanted it to be and upload all my content into the brand new theme.

However, when I came to do so, I was confronted with shortcodes galore! I had no idea what these shortcodes were but persevered after kind of sussing them out. I asked the theme developer to help me too as I couldn’t get some of the features right - to which he kindly obliged.

But - I still couldn’t get it to look how I wanted it to look, and the short codes were not working so I went looking for answers and stumbled across said You Tube video.

The Video

If you’ve stayed with me so far, we’ll done - I’ll now let you know about this awesome video. Essentially, you need Wordpress, which is already utilised in WA, and a plug-in called Elementor if you haven't heard of it already. Elementor is simply an awesome tool that lets you select whole pages of layout from templates in its library that have different features like a hero header image, slider gallery and feature boxes etc to build your site.

However, this guy, Tyler, in his video goes one step further and has grabbed all the sections of the pages, and separated them so that you can mix and match or just select the parts that you need - as he mentions, you may not need the whole page as a template, you might just need an image with call to action (CTA) or a map, or a testimonial section. Well, he does this for you.

This is why it's not essential that you must go with a premium theme on Wordpress in order to beautify your site and make it a bit different to all the others out there. He goes through the whole process step by step "with no step skipped" as he puts it - and shows you how to build your site for free with Wordpress.

Obviously, the only part that you need to part cash with is going to be the hosting - whether it be at WA or elsewhere.
