Wealthy Affiliate Offers A Real Lesson in Encouraging Motivation
You have to admit it, the ranking system at WA is often a talking point amongst members, in fact sometimes a heated debate and nearly always passionate.
The truth is people really care about their rank and many become very competitive about achieving a higher position.
It's a clever system for motivating and retaining member's interest, and so there is a lot to learn from it as a marketing tool in itself.
Motivation Tool
It encourages participation and engagement, which keeps the site active. New members instantly see that this is an active and current site when they enter - a good selling point.
The ranking system itself sets mini targets by explaining how rank is achieved. Through creating, helping or being active within the community, each of these graphs acts as its own motivation factor to encourage more participation or activity from members.
The affiliate program target has also recently changed, from needing 300 referrals down to 100, again because many people would be thinking that is too big a target to reach now and would give up. Lower the target and retain the motivation.
I've always admired how the WA platform manages to retain engagement and actively encourage help and support from more experienced members to newer ones.
Sure there are always challenges but it is a great model for motivating people and in a competitive field of online marketing it has created a nice calm learning space that is ideal for new marketeers and others. That too is a good selling point.
Thanks, Marie

The -200 reduction is a great marketing tactic called creating urgency. And it works quite well!
This 300 to 100 is nothing new, this is only till the end of the year; when the year is over you will have 300 as usual.
It's not new but it still a clever motivating tool because if they didn't reduce it then people would see the target as out of reach.
The point is to keep up with your audience and keep adapting your strategies.
