The start of Herblife

I bet many of you recognize the title, yes the Herbalife #tag authored by their founder, Mark Hughes, in 1980 He started the company loading his car boot with product and selling Door to Door, and Word of Mouth, by-passing the more conservative distribution methods and retail sales, with the marketing theme " loose weight now, ask me how " which he later passed onto his independent distributors, then he developed the business model to what it is today.

By 1982 Reached $2 Million sales

By 1982 just 2 years Herbalife had reached $2 million in sales and started their Worldwide expansion firstly into Canada.

In 1985 the Californian Attorney Generals Office sued Herbalife for making false claims about their products. The company settled the suit for $850,000 while admitting no wrongdoing .

In 1986 The company became a Publicly Traded company on the NSDAQ and in 1996 reached $1 Billion annual sales.

Employing 6200 people Worldwide with a turnover of $4.072 billion in 2012 returning $477.19 Million a 16% increase on 2011

November 2013 they operated in 91 countries through a network of 3.2 million independent distributors most of them earning commissions on product sales and larger commissions on MLM recruitment's.

Various people and NGO,s Claim that Herbalife operate a very sophisticated Pyramid scheme ( MLM) , The company denies these allegations consequentially since March 2014 They have been under investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ). we will have to see how this investigation progresses.

There is no doubt that Herbalife is operated on a MLM business Model most Ex distributors even ones with no grudge confirm this in there thousands. As to whether or not they operate on completely ethical grounds remains to be seen.

However with sometimes up to 80% attrition rate each year there is no other way this business could be successfully run but it does leave a lot of financially damaged people along the way, like internet scams you have to do due diligence on any business opportunity that is offered, If people don't check out these offerings then the mantra is " let the buyer beware, and as they say if it seems to good to be true, it probably is"

Research carried out in 2012 Found that the majority of distributors Lose money, and the chances of any of them making the Testimonial headline implied income of $100,000 is approximately 1 in 5,000. Them odds ain't good !!!

Herbalife overstates its distributors retail sales and understates their recruiting rewards. WHY, because if they stated the true figures they would confirm that Herbalife is actually a Pyramid Scheme.

Bill Ackman recently presented a series of arguments on CNN Claiming that since 1980 when the company was established, Herbalife's has been responsible for more than 3.5 Billion of Total net loss suffered by the people at the bottom of the Herbalife chain..

He said that millions of people around the World hoping to become millionaires were being duped with the scheme and if they knew that to make $100,000 as claimed and becoming a member of the Millionaire Team - There is a fraction of a 1% chance of ever making this team . No one would even sign up for it.

My recommendation to anyone even considering to join Herbalife as a distributor or in any other capacity Don't Do it , Don't throw your money away

Some comments Below from people who have lost money with Herbalife.

Herbalife is a pyramid scheme. The people that get rich are the really outgoing ones who have no problem luring more people into it. They use your desire for the American Dream to take advantage of you. The products are very overpriced. If you want to get fit, you can do it through many other means. You don't need these products. Be smart and cautious.

The world needs to know Herbalife is nothing but money hungry, gold digging people!!!!!!!!!

Filled with lies and almost a cult-like atmosphere, Herbalife and its "wellness centers" are by definition a scam. Only the top tiers make any money and they make it off YOU.

Lose Weight now, Ask me how. (Should read loose Money now, ask me how)

The total worldwide value for the weight loss industry is $500'000 Billion , Herbalife's cut of that is 1% thats $5 Billion annual turnover.

The purpose of all these regulations is to protect people from themselves but shouldn't people be able to protect themselves from themselves.

Hi again,

I was in Herbalife for a full year (1986-87) and grossed about $100,000 (after paying for product) and after expenses net about $50,000 after all the travelling and business expenses. It was a lot of hard work, but I loved it and went to every conference, training session etc. I followed Mark Hughes around at a convention once to see if he ever had a smoke, took a drink or came down to earth. He never did and reeked of integrity. His energy level and commitment seem to know no bounds and I began to think their was speed or cocaine in the product. Would have probably stayed in the business longer, but divorced a wife of 25 years and gave all assets to the wife. She had experienced a big weight lost which resulted in 3 of her jealous sisters coming on board. I went back to being a high school principal.

You can't imagine how shocked I was when I heard that Mark Hughes had died in his 40's and it confirmed for me that there were some sort of drugs in the product that kept you hyped and burning the candles at both ends.

Your right on in your article about herbalife I ended up feeling about getting people to sign up (who despite a good result with the product - COULD NOT MARKET IT OR PROBABLY ANYTHING ELSE. Later in life I got into another MLM because I liked the product myself and used it so much, but it fizzled out.. Too many things can go wrong - like the company closes up and leaves you hanging or it is illegal.

I must say that will with Herbalife and met and took every course I could from Jim Rohn. It is the best training and advice I ever had in life. I have no plans on going back to MLM, but often thought of writing a book "How to Win back your Friends that you Lost in Your Last MLM Fiasco".

It was all a great learning experience for me and I am glad I did it.

The only thing on a positive note....I have had people tell me their weight loss products really work...and I know that some people are making pretty good money at it and receiving yearly trips....however, with that said most mlm's do not work...and the attrition rate is really high. Again...I have not joined Herbal Life but many people have approached me to join....

Yeah. There are heaps of pyramid schemes and a lot of people who do believe in these schemes. The funny thing is that even after they lose money with these, they still don't give up and still pump money in them. It's a shame, but that's how things are.
Anyways, thanks for sharing this and I'll make sure to pass the word to everybody I know ;)

Hello Lowery,
Its amazing isnt it how people seem to get an addiction to throwing their money away then bitch about it afterwards must be some sort of financial masochism, still there's nought stranger than pep's.
