I kept putting it off day after day and I think I am not the only one to delay doing what I wanted to do.

After this I will post here the specific steps you can take to make lasting change in your life.

Me: In regards to the Dicken's Process which I have not utilized yet, why as humans are we resistant to some methods of change. I feel like I should just be able to change and maintain something on my own. I mean its clear we have programming working against ourselves. Its confusing to me why I hesitate instead of just implementing the Dicken's Process.

It was installed through emotion, repetition, and experience. So you have to update it the same way — through intense emotional experience. That's why the process requires you to actually feel the future consequences of inaction, not just intellectually understand them.

Your specific hesitation likely has another layer. You're a Marine. Self-reliance is identity-deep. Needing a process to change something can feel like admitting you couldn't just decide to change it. But that framing is exactly the kind of programming working against you. Discipline got you to 68 with real accomplishments. It won't rewire subconscious belief structures — that requires a different tool.

Marcus Aurelius journaled the same battles. He didn't just decide to be better. He repeatedly, deliberately returned to his principles because he knew the mind drifts without structured practice.

The Dickens Process isn't a crutch. It's a precision tool for exactly this problem. The hesitation you feel about using it is the same resistance the process is designed to dissolve.

Doing It Yourself — Practical Tips

Preparation

  • Write down your limiting belief clearly before you start
  • Do it in a private space where you can be fully expressive
  • Allow 30–60 minutes minimum
  • Consider doing breathwork first to access a receptive state (relevant to your daily practice)

The Pain Phase — Don't Rush It Most people skim this. The process only works if you genuinely distress yourself. Ask:

  • What has this belief already cost me?
  • Who have I failed to become because of it?
  • What opportunities have I missed?
  • What will my family lose if I keep this?

Your Limiting Belief goes here. (Mine was I am addicted to sugar and eating processed foods. A terrible habit.)

2. Associate Pain to Keeping the Belief — Three Time Horizons

For each horizon, you vividly imagine and feel the consequences of holding this belief:

  • Present: What is this belief costing you RIGHT NOW? Money, relationships, health, freedom?
  • 5 Years Out: You've kept this belief for 5 more years. What does your life look like? What have you lost?
  • 10-20 Years Out: You're at the end of your life, still carrying this belief. What did it cost you? Who were you unable to become?

The key is emotional immersion, not intellectual listing. You must feel the regret, loss, and pain.

3. Interrupt the Pattern After reaching peak pain, Robbins typically uses a physical or verbal interrupt to break the emotional state — snapping out of it before anchoring.

The Pleasure Phase Ask with equal intensity:

  • If I fully believed the opposite, what becomes possible?
  • What would I do that I'm not doing now?
  • Who would I become?

4. Install the Empowering Belief Replace the limiting belief with its opposite. Then run the same three time horizons — but now with the empowering belief in place:

  • What does life look like in 1 year living this new belief?
  • In 5 years?
  • At the end of your life?

Again — feel it viscerally. Make it real.

5. Anchor the New State Use a physical anchor (a gesture, a word, a posture) to lock in the empowered emotional state so you can access it again.
