Being Prepared Is So Important For Us

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to use this blog post to illustrate the importance of being prepared even in a seemingly small way.

I always try to be prepared for various possibilities.

On Dec 15, 2021 Wednesday, I sent myself extra money from my bank in the USA just in case an approaching Typhoon would disrupt (an understatement).

On Thursday, Dec 16th, Super Typhoon Struck the Island of Cebu, Philippines.

At around 11 pm, we lost electricity and WIFI.

We were living in a concrete 2 story home at the time and I had Wen and Melissa Jeane sleep in the hallway which had no windows while I stayed awake the entire night in case windows would get blown out. Fortunately, that didn't happen but we were buffeted by the winds and rain all night long. I watched through the windows as roofs of poor Filipinos were ripped off by the wind.

The next morning, the storm had passed, but it left something behind:

Total Destruction.

When I went outside and we lived along a main highway, I couldn't believe my eyes.

It looked like a war zone.

The road was impassable as it was covered by downed trees and utility poles.

The first day Filipinos worked together to open up on lane of traffic. It would take more time to open the road completely.

We had no water, no electricity, No WIFI, No cell phone service and that would last weeks.

Thankfully I love walking so every day, I looked at what was necessary for us and I would often walk to the next towns to get it looking at the destruction along the way. Here are some pics.

Inside the Public Market (Mercado)

These pics give you an idea of the widespread destruction on Cebu.

The extra money I sent myself was invaluable and held us over until I could finally send myself more money later in January 2022.

My being used to walking certainly helped me find what we needed up to 24 miles away.

I even helped out where I could. There were 2 sections of road near our house where the trees could not be removed by hand on one lane and it would be weeks before the government would get there so I took my hand saw and cut the trees up and Filipinos would carry that away and they were eventually cleared. :-)

Oh I forgot to mention that we did stock up on canned food the day before and also bottled water.

Nothing since then has approached Odette in the damage caused here on Cebu.

So where ever we live, I keep in mind what we might face in the future to decide whether its a place we want to live at or not and that includes the possibility of earthquakes.

Hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane.

Hi Mel
'The importance of being prepared even in a seemingly small way.'
As I read those words I have to smile, you see I live on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean, 7 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Who would of thought (even with the tension) that the US would actually bomb Venezuela. My government is panicking, they have close off the streets around the main police station, army on high alert, they have even begun registering all Venezuelan nationals (already refugees) currently in the country, and are expecting a huge influx of refugees to come here.
We're unfortunately are not prepared for this - so that's why your words resonated this morning.
Cheers ^_^ the importance of being prepared even in a seemingly small way.

Wow Paul! I never realized Trinidad was so close to Venezuela. Had to look at the map.

Something happens that affects so many others. I hope you and your country will be ok.

Hey Mel
We have situations , we've never experienced before.
This is bad, very bad. The effects of this will last for years to come. the GPS over our nation is currently jammed, planes coming our airports are having a very hard time. Although the US says the airspace over Venezuela is closed, we are so close that our own airspace is affected.
Thanks for caring ^_^ Cheers Appreciated

Unfortunately, that makes sense, Paul. Appreciate the on the scene reporting, I'll certainly not see in my news.

Mel

Yep, you certainly won't see this on US newsfeeds, although you might get it on WION (India) ^_^

1

Thanks for the India News Tip. I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days or more and see what they are reporting.

Cool

Something can be said for concrete wall and roof when it comes to hurricanes. Although, I would prefer would or something more flexible when it comes to earthquakes.

1

Our home now has concrete walls, much stronger roof, Plywood ceiling. An improvement,

Still not safe from an incoming Asteroid though. ;-)

Well, asteroids be damned!
