Let's be Real

As most of you hopefully can tell by now that character means everything to me. My last post was on integrity, and that certainly makes up an important pat of character. But I want to touch on a little bit about being real. In this day and age, it is very easy to hide behind many falsehoods and misrepresentations when you write a blog or an article to be posted on the internet. Especially on social media, we see misinterpretations and personal views, instead of facts being laid out when people post on Facebook and twitter. You don't have to be a journalist to have integrity, and post the truth on social media or a blog post on the internet. Being responsible and taking responsibility for the content you write is essential when you write anything that others are going to see. If you are going to write any type of article, being real to your audience is crucial to the reading of your blog. The word "authenticity" is a starting point for being real. Everything from telling your story to selling food products to historical tours is given the label "authentic," which really just means real. But there is something behind the concept of authenticity, or realness. In our busy, very superficial world today, there's a lot of fakery, deception, and contrived perfection; we're all trying to live up to certain images and ideals and in the process we lose something of our "true selves." But it is possible to be true to yourself and the people around you and in the process celebrate those messy, real, and authentic parts of yourself that make you who you are.

There are several things that we must do in order to be real. One major component of being real is understanding yourself. The first step to being real begins when you actively decide to be genuine. This is a personal choice. You are going to have to act and write about things that are in accordance with who you are and what your values and beliefs are. This will sometimes make you will feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. Being real will require you to do things that are not popular with a lot of people. And that's okay. That is part of being honest with yourself and others. This is really important when others read about what you value and what you do not value. But this shows others that you are living a life that is honest and true, and that is what being real is all about.

Your values will continue to change. Remember that being real is a continually changing process. Things in your life will always change, and so will your values. You're not the same person at 20 years old, that you are at 50. As we get older, hopefully we learn more and gain a considerable amount of experience along our journey. You will have good experiences and bad one's throughout your life. The things you once thought were acceptable at 30, may not be acceptable when you are 50. So you will always need to be learning and understanding things about ourselves. We use the things that are important to us, and disregard the things we no longer have any use for. Being real is being consistent over time, and re-evaluating the process and redefining who we are as people, and who we want to be.

Being open-minded is another part of being real. Always be open to new ideas and different perspectives on things. Thinking the same way can lead us into a path of limiting your abilities and what you think about your true self. If you accept life as a continual process of learning new things, it will change your opinion of how you see yourself and the ideas and values you think in others, which in turn affects how you see yourself as being real in the world.

Let the person of your past go. We are all creatures of habit. We can all take comfort in the fact that we see ourselves as the same person we were 20,30 or 40 years ago. But, the truth is that we are evolving all the time. Some things like our personalities or our creative thinking may remain consistent over time. But there is a significant amount of changes that can be scary and disturbing over time as well. So again, let the important things remain in your life and let the things that disrupt your life go, with the ease of the wind.

We all must have courage to be real. Being real means being courageous. When we do things that are different or not the way others expect us to do things, we put ourselves in a vulnerable position. Not understanding who we are emotionally, can cause us to make wrong choices in how we react to certain situations in life. As we reflect on a particular situation, we may realize that the outcome is not what we expected. Let's say your relationship with your girlfriend is not going great, and you are not happy. You spend more time trying to pretend to be the perfect partner because you don't want others to see the relationship in a different light. It takes courage to admit there is a problem, and fight against what society thinks and the social pressures that come from what other people will say and think.

So when we talk about being real, just be yourself. Give story's about your life. Talk about the good and the bad things you have encountered on your journey. Don't stretch the truth, people want to know that there are other people out here that have just as many crazy stories as you may have had. That's what builds trust, and that's what people want to hear. People love to hear a good story. Especially when it's the truth. Just be real. Much of this article was taken from wiki how.
