Are We Selling or Just Chatting? - Day 15
30 Days To Crush Email Marketing!
Day 15
Are We Selling Or Just Chatting?
Hello and welcome to you on this Sunday to Day 15 of my 30 Day Email Marketing Challenge.
This post represents a massive milestone for this challenge - the half way point. Thanks to everyone who has been reading along and lending their support.
Who says the tortoise can't win..we will get there!
Today I want us to think a little about the choices of email we are sending when we are marketing our business through our emails.
We actually have a choice of two kinds of emails, the first being a solo email and the second being a content email with an offer thrown in.
Now that we are professionals and we are talking the lingo, we spoke yesterday about "purpose". We must always ask ourselves "what is the purpose of this email that I am sending out".
The sole purpose of the solo email is to close the sale. Plain and simple. We want our reader to click on the link that takes them to our sales page and then click our buy button!
The purpose of the other is to share content which may include a tip, a review, a blog post, or just about anything else we think may be of relevance and value to our reader - with an offer to buy something thrown in. We will refer to this type of email as content with an offer.
Now to a little word of warning...I fear this is the point in this challenge where you may agree or disagree with me.
I understand the importance of writing pure content emails from time to time but it is my strongest belief that the main purpose and goal in email marketing is to make some money directly from the emails we send. Would you not agree?
At the very least we must find the healthy balance between the two types.
Obviously we don’t want to send solo email after solo email without any content for weeks on end, do so and I'll guarantee you that your readers will unsubscribe from your list faster than I can publish this very post.
But it is important to find that happy medium. Get the balance wrong and your solo emails will have less impact, make sure you save them for “the real deal” when you really want to close that sale.
Try it next time you're writing your next email - think very carefully about how you want to promote a products within it. Don't be scared to sell to your audience...you'll get a feel for your audience and what the right balance is over time.
Tomorrow I will show you some of my own tips for writing what I think is a great solo email...
I will leave you with my thought for today...
Remember that each new day is a chance for us to put one step in front of the other...

And needs his dinner after a long day at work. sylv
Hey - I hope you keep safe. I hear a tropical storm category 1 is passing through UK, Ireland and the west coast of Scotland.
Thanks Sylvia, trust me before you know it you will develop your skills and confidence to add direct mail to your marketing arsenal alongside social media. As for the tropical storm...it is passing by the west coast of the UK...apparently with winds upto 90mph...but believe it or not...and this can only happen in the UK..because I am located on the East coast...I have nice sunny and calm weather forecast due to hot air coming up from Spain lol. so all good :)
Hi John, absolutely. More often than not it may be a URL which directs your reader back to a particular blog post on your website or offer relevant to your social media post.
The emails I appreciate are the ones where there is content, with a link to the vendor's blog should I want to read more. Then I know there will be a link to buy something, but there will also be a video or more information so I can make a decision.
We're always selling right? A purely content email can also have a link to a blog with previous posts or offers on the sidebar.
Hi Dianne, yes I absolutely agree...we are always selling..whether it is a product, service or ourselves (attraction marketing). I myself subscribe to a few lists...some of which I enjoy the content..and others I like purely to see what they are selling me..because they consistently offer stuff I am interested in and often buy from them. Thanks for your interesting comments. Have a lovely day
Hi Robert, of course you can...I started this challenge to help me write consistently for a one month period. You can bookmark the previous posts in the series and have a little read of them. Each post is short and sweet but imparts a valuable tip or strategy. I will be following up this challenge with some actual technical training on how to start and implement an email list. A convenient list of my first 10 posts in this series can be found here: 10 Days Into my 30 Day Challenge.Hooraa! Thanks for your interest...hope all going well so far with your training here at WA.
Thanks, only started a few days ago and don’t even have a site up and running yet but I can see that the email marketing side of things is important and works very well. After all it was an email that brought me to this site in the first place. Thank you for putting this together.
You are most welcome. Hope your training is going well so far. Try and remember that its not a sprint :) Sometimes we feel we have to do everything in the first day and it gets us down. Small consistent steps..one small task at a time will get you where you want to go. I wish you every success.

In reading through this post, I see that I need to go back to the first one, to see the other content you have included...Lots of useful tips and advice that all of us can use...
I could not help thinking also of my main email account I use and where I get literally a couple of hundred of emails in a day on this or that (to include Wealthy Affiliate)...
Over time, I have taken to not opening most, because I know that the only correspondence I am getting is yet another pitch for another shiny object I don't need.
The ratio of useful content to a sales pitch emails is so far off the recommended guidelines (which I hear different numbers for) with some lists I am a subscriber of...
Basically, I know they only want to sell and could care less about helping me get better at my own marketing...They do not add any value from my perspective.
BUT, I find they do have a use for me. I like to collect emails that I think are particularly effective, and also there are some writers of email that are better than others...
What better way to add to my swipe files than to let them build up, then go through and pick out the best of the best? A good example is a marketer named Sam Bakker...
I have learned so much from him (and a few others) on how to write effective emails. What he creates converts, and converts well. Obviously, I am not going to copy exactly what he writes...
But building up a swipe file of good copy for whatever you are writing copy for makes sense. You are not starting at ground zero and the process is shortened for your own creations...
Good post, I enjoyed, and I will be looking at the others you have published to now!
Cheers!
Dave : )
Hi Dave, thanks for stopping by and for leaving your feedback. Yes I whole heartily agree with your points. And yes, the vast majority of the marketers who pitch you day in and day out with their emails aren't interested in us at all...and just want to squeeze some money out of you. But the beauty is...there are a few decent marketers who do care and it is your job to seek them out. And always remember, you control the relationship between marketer and your inbox...if you are getting annoyed with that relationship..you can cancel it at any time. My advice is to regularly tidy it up and make sure that you only receive the mail you want to receive. If you are spammed, make sure you report it to your provider. Glad to have you on board Dave, have a terrific day.
