Cruising, Learning & Blogging on a Cruise in the South Pacific

If you've read a previous post of mine then you'll know that right now I'm on an 11 day cruise which is a requirement for my job.

In fact, if you have a look at the map above, we are situated just about where I've inserted the red cross.

Thanks to satellite Internet, I'm able to write and publish this post from a cruise liner in the middle of the ocean.

Quite remarkable isn't it?

So yes, it is possible to run an online business from practically anywhere, as long as you have an Internet connection and some sort of tech device to do business.

However, it does not mean it will necessarily be easy!

Satellite Internet is not cheap, about as fast as old dial up speeds and annoyingly unreliable and inconsistent.

Forget about live chat, watching videos and trying to use online photo editing sites, it's just not going to happen.

One has to make peace with the fact that it will take at least 3 minutes for each new page to load.. if it happens at all.

Then there's the crazy disruption to one's usual routine which seems to have slowed me down to match the Internet speed. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Throw a cyclone into the mix, resulting in 7 meter wave swells and it becomes miraculous that one did not decorate one's laptop screen with the last meal one had a couple of hours earlier.

So what can you do? Be patient, accept that it is what it is and do what you can.

I have still managed to write and publish two blog posts this week, start working on Month 2 tasks for the Super Affiliate Challenge and be as active as possible here at WA.

Oh... and now I've added a blog post here too. :)

It's not at my usual pace but it's still happening albeit much S L O W E R..

Never give up!!

PS: I could have included at least another two pics but then this post would have taken another few days at least... maybe next time and then again, maybe not... :)

Thks Mark, This could certainly serve as one review for your current assignment....the information is relevant to our world of internet connection.
I for one take a cruise yearly and find it is important to have accessible quality internet services...do you think that this varies as where we are in the world or by the available technology brought onboard by the cruise line itself?

Thanks for your effort to stay connected...happy sailing!

Well I live in Australia and the Internet is not easy here either. National Broadband Network (NBN) drops out about every half hour for 5 minutes. Has been this way since ADSL was replaced with NBN. I have been putting up with it, but would be nice to have an Internet the just works. LOL
Enjoy your travels. You will enjoy your Internet when you return home. Dave

Message from solid earth to middle of the sea. Post received thank you. I hope your laptop is waterresistent and well.... I hope you enjoy the cruise, I would.
You incarnate the laptop lifestyle very good. Freedom, adventure, creativity.
Makes me dream.
À bientôt matelos

Enjoy my Friend!

Enjoy the seacenery (I love puns) and the incredible experience, it will give you loads of inspiration that you can share. What you are doing is unique!

Just the pure ability to write anywhere, to continue learning anywhere and to post from (just about) anywhere...with some hassles, but still doable! That's wonderful, Mark!

Happy travels, my friend!

Sue

Happy sailing!!!

Hey Mark, outstanding! I've also run an online business (Wealthy Affiliate) from a cruise ship and I can agree that it's not easy using Satellite Internet. One of the challenging things I found was the speed, and the cost. What I found myself doing was writing locally on my computer, then connecting to the internet to post, it was quite the process to get through 100's of message in a day but it was easily done using multiple tabs in my browser and being a little creative.

You are proof that an Internet business can be run from anywhere...literally anywhere with an Internet connection. Well done :)

Carson

Hi Carson,

As you say, it is proof that one can do this from anywhere there's an Internet, even if it's very slow. :)

It has reminded me to be grateful for my Internet back home too.

I've been writing posts as you suggest and that works well. Getting through the messages is a challenge but having my IPad has helped as I literally grab a moment wherever I can to do it.

Thanks Carson. Great to hear you've done this too. :)

-Mark
