There is Power in What We Do

As far back as I can remember, I've had a habit of journaling. This goes back to my early childhood, long before I ever became a freelance writer. The first writing I ever did, other than my homework, was for the purpose of collecting my thoughts and documenting the events of my life. I was journaling this morning when it hit me how much power we really wield in the world, as writers/bloggers/webmasters/marketers, etc...

Regardless of what type of site (or sites) you run, your message is going around the world in ways that were impossible just a couple decades ago. I mean, it's not like it was impossible to get your message around the world before the Internet age, but it took a lot more work and it had to be either on tv, radio or on printed paper. That's basically all there was. It was expensive and difficult, which is why so few people were doing it.

Now we have the World Wide Web... Almost everyone has access to it, but how many of them are thinking of it in this way? How many of them actually use it to get any type of message out there at all? Most of them are wasting time on social media, as if that was all there was to the Internet. They're basically using it to entertain themselves, rather than to reach out and touch people around the world and actually change something.

Not that there's anything wrong with entertaining oneself, but that's really all most of them are doing. Now on the bright side, that makes them very good consumers for the rest of us. They're the ones who buy up whatever it is we're selling, whether it's our own products, someone else's, or even just our ideas that we're trying to promote.

See, that's what I mean by our "message." Your message might be different from mine, but you're putting one out there as an influencer on your website. I started writing professionally as a freelancer. My message then changed with each job I took on. It could be a real estate agency in the UK, a landscaping company in Canada, a pest control service in Nebraska or a dentist in my native Texas, but they were all needed my content to help get something across to their website viewers.

Even if they just needed traffic, it was for the ultimate purpose of gathering customers they could sell something to at a later date. The message in my content helped influence people in places I'd never been to and I didn't even have to leave home to do it. That's pretty awesome, if you really think about it. And I get paid to do this stuff, lol!

So now I have my own websites. Yes, they're young and struggling... It's been hard to dedicate the amount of time to them that I would like, because I'm still writing for others and I have to, in order to keep the lights on. But I have two websites, each with a different message. One is to promote Wealthy Affiliate, which is likely the one with the greatest income potential. The message I'm promoting there is all about entrepreneurship and hiring yourself, instead of working for someone else and thinking there's job security in that.

The other site is more of a personal development site, where I encourage people to get their lives in order and grab life by the horns. That's very important to me and I feel society needs to hear those ideas, before it implodes anymore than it already has. I believe it all starts with the individual and that website gives me the power to promote those ideas in ways that I never could before.

So see, there is great power in what we do. If the notion of "changing the world" seems silly, think again. While the average person on social media might see it that way, it's largely because they're not utilizing that platform to actually do so. We have a mega-platform that involves using other platforms (like social media) to actually get our ideas out there, deliver value and sell whatever it is we intend to sell.

So think about this the next time you get bogged down with the unpleasant little details and struggles of what you're doing. Think about how awesome this really is, compared to the bump and grind of some ordinary J.O.B., where you're just another cog on a wheel. We are PRODUCERS marketing to consumers and we have the power to influence their decisions.

Remember to use this power wisely. Be ethical and responsible in everything you do, especially on the World Wide Web. The world stage has grown and it doesn't need anymore bad actors than it already has. We can make this a better place by just doing a better job and promoting a better message.

Yes, I agree that we most likely have more power than we realize, and what we are doing with our websites can offer many kinds of help to the world.

Beautifull message.
Let us make the web a better place...
